You might be wondering how I came up with those names?

I looked at the last 10 years and selected every coach who has had Either multiple state champions in that time, or Significant Team Success. You might be partial to some other coach, but under that criteria, no other coach that I can think of is worth mentioning.

OK if you think I missed someone who is it?

Frank Pelegri

OH! MY! Good one, as usuall I was just thinking 3A. I will add him immediately.

Thanks!

Spiderman said...

I went to add pelegri to the poll and this is the message I got.

"You cannot edit this poll because someone has already voted."

My apologies to coach Pelegri for leaving him off this list, he is certainly deserving.

What about Mcdonell. He has to be one of the best ever.

Spiderman said...

I tried to keep it current, I used stats from just the last 10 years.

No offense to coach Mac but he has not had any significant acheivements since around 1995. He did have some success at Central, but did not have any champions or team success.

If we were talking about lifetime achievement or all time coaches in Dade, he would certainly be on the list.

Anonymous said...

I do not think there should be a poll for this. A coach's credentials and achivements speak for themselves. Here you are going to get more votes on who is liked or disliked more. For example, Osorio has not done shit compared to the palmetto coach, yet he is ahead. Rivera and Husk are being left aside as well. If this is just for fun then I guess, play on.

Anonymous,

You actually make a very good point, your argument is not only valid but likely accurate. This is in fact not a scientific poll by any stretch of the imagination, in fact it is likely as you stated, a popularity contest; but then isn’t every poll?

The Truth is the Best coach in Dade County the last 10 years is Victor Balmeceda, he has had more champions and team success than any other, next would likely be Husk with multiple champs and two team state title, followed by Soderholm also with a team state title, and multiple champs, then it would be Tejada and Pardo, both with runner-up finishes and both with multiple state champs. Beyond that would be speculating, but based on stats alone, these are the true top five the last 10 years.

So the poll may in fact reflect popularity, which can also be referred to as perception, the problem is that to each individual, his perception is in fact also his reality.

And obviously, this poll is just for fun, I don't think the result will prove a dog gone thing.

Osorio 5 years at Hialeah.4 top 10 state finishes. 2 top 5 finishes at state. Multiple state champs. No middle school feeder just high school kids. Not bad for someone who hasn't done shit.

all polls are popularity contest.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

No one said Osorio was a bum, but he does not have the credentials of the others just yet. He might be 6th on that list, but we were talking about the top 5. Of course, if the question stated in the last 5 years Instaed of 10, Osorio would jump over Husk and Pardo, but that was not the question.

Anonymous,

Just to clarify a couple of things. This poll refers to who are the best current coaches in dade. That clearly means that it is a popularity contest as to who is more widely seen in tournaments. From what I can remember, Balmaceda, Tejada, and Osorio are the only ones on that list to have a reserved seat in the state finals the past five years in a row. Pretty impressive if you ask me. They have had kids in the finals at different weight classes at different times. Any coach can get a kid here and there with some talent and desire, few can make kids talented and get them to the big dance year in and year out.

Balmaceda by far is the most impressive coach right now but you must take into account that most of his kids come to South Dade with talent and massive mat experience from years of training at the middle school and even earlier at times. Even the kids he gets to come out in high school walk into a talent filled room where they have no choice but to become champions faster than normal. A great coach who knows how to deal with people and get from them what he needs. Every year you can count on him having his suit on and sitting in the finals having sweaty smelly kids jump on his $300 suits. Can someone tell me why coaches feel the need to wear suits for the finals?

Tejada has plenty of help. His best years come from his middle school talent and coach Monroe Owen as well as coach George Borgen. Rumor has it that he has a massive amount of his graduated kids come back and work with his new breed day in and day out. Another great example of a coach that can get the most out of the people around him. Yet another rumor has Osvaldo Frigger helping out as an assistant coach. Not bad for a program that continues to impress year in and year out. It is impossible to count out Braddock for any top five ranking. Coach Tejada is another coach along with Balmaceda and Osorio who has a permanent seat reserved for him in the Lakeland State Finals.

Osorio has gotten the most out of his six years at Hialeah. Unless I am mistaken he has only been a high school coach for six year. In that time he has had multiple state champs and runner-ups. A couple of top 10 finishes as a team. He has no middle school help. Yes, I know that many coaches say that a middle school is not needed to become a great team. Problem with that argument is that it is the coaches with middle schools that say that. I was looking at the top 10 list of teams in the state the past 10 years and Hialeah is the only team from Dade without a middle school feeder on that list. I will hold my judgment on him until I see his new kids perform.

Husk is a legend. Nothing compares to him, the air the he brings into a room is amazing (and I don’t mean the decomposing smell of his entourage). Now he is at Columbus and rumor has it that his talent has been recruited from the South. I don’t know if that is true but in the event that it is, then much more should be expected from him.

I am not going to waste your time chatting about the other coaches on the list. I’m sure you know their credentials well. In the end this is a popularity contest but also a contest of who has done the best with their kids and teams the past 10 years. If this was a lifetime achievement award then Husk would top the list hands down. In the meantime try not to trash the coaches on the list. Once again I’m sure there are reasons why their names are up there.

Spiderman said...

I have stipulated that I erroneously omitted Frank Pelegri from the list, but now there are two votes for "Someone was left off the list" would you please fill us in as to whom else I could have left off?

Anonymous said...

Yeah I don't think Osorio is that great a coach either. I do not want to bash any caoches, but I am entitled to my opinion. Yes he does get a kid here and there to the finals, but he has also had many kids that should have been in the finals that just ran out of gas. Same thing for his teams, they never show up and wrestle when it really matters. That is not great coaching. We all know that a team can be in the top 10 and even the top 5 with 2 or 3 wrestlers, but to be a serious contender for the title you need great teams year in and year out. I don't know maybe I just have higher standards for the phrase
"Best Coaches".

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

Love'em of Hate'em, Osorio did a great job at Hialeah. He took a team that was traditionally a laughing stock in the wrestling world and put them on the map, and no one wanted to face them. DO I think he is in the Elite? Well not just yet, but he can get there quickly if he has the same success at American that he had at Hialeah.

Anonymous said...

Osorio, stop writing about yourself in the third person.

Anonymous said...

He should make his identity known as Anonymousorio, Ruler of the Underpants.

Moon Knight said...

Anonymous,

I agree with you as it pertains to him being one of the elite coaches in Dade. Unless he wins a TEAM state title or comes in second to Oviedo or South Dade he can't and shouldn't be on the list. But you cannot discount what he has done at Hialeah. Like I said, I will reserve my judgment until I see what he does at American. At Hialeah he always had four to five studs and a buch of desent wrestlers so that explains his tournament demise. I will wait and see.

Anonymous said...

Osorio tell it like it is, you recruit your talent. you don't build shit. you just take other coaches kids.

Anonymous said...

FRANK FU@!#NG PELEGRI. HE SHOULD BE SECOND BEST ON ANY LIST.

Spiderman said...

Anonymousorio, Ruler of the Underpants.

AAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

That is funny!

Whether it's him or not I don't know but that's funny.

Don't rule out that it could be one of his wrestlers, former wrestlers, assistant coach, or some other Osorio lover.

It could be a lover of the ruler of the pants, not necessarily the ruler himself.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

WOW! calm down dude. I already stated that leaving Pelegri off was a mistake. However, second is a stretch, maybe 4th behind Soderholm. Balmeceda, Husk and Soderholm all have better credentials in the last 10 years than does Pelegri. Also, those 3 did it in 3A which is a little tougher than 1A, Pelegri was a 3A caoch for many years and had a couple state champs there, and some great teams but we are still taking about the last 10 years.

Anonymous said...

Didn't Pelegri coach Balmaceda, Mendez, and Tejada at Southwest at one point? Quite a tree...

Anonymous said...

I think KW should be added to this list of top coaches. The guy is good.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

Balmeceda and Mendez for sure, Tejada I believe wrestled at South West but it might have been during the transition years. Mendez was likely the best wrestler of the three; I say this because he was the only one to win a ring. In fairness to Balmeceda though he ran up against a juggernaut, and was Teched if I remember correctly. Tejada was not much of a wrestler himself, but has proven to be quite the coach.

Spiderman said...

WOW,

Great turnout for this poll, I think I might have hit a nerve.

Two more votes for "someone left off"...

I'll tell you what, since I can't change the poll, lets make "Someone left off" the Pelegri vote. Unless you can show me that I missed someone else, when the poll is over I will use all the votes for "Someone left off" and they will count for Frank Pelegri. You all have the ability to re-enter the poll and change your votes, so you may now vote for Pelegri as well.

DR. DOOM said...

Spidey,
I believe Balmaceda was TECHED and then PINNED during his state finals match. It is also rumored that Yeager went in to the stands slapped Balmaceda's mom and left with his girlfriend.

DR. DOOM said...

Spidey,

You know what this poll is really good for? It is a great way to take a census of who frequents this Blog! What do you think?

Spiderman said...

Doom,

OUCH! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

You are on a roll today. I guess the first of the month is when you come out and antagonize everyone?

BTW what you said Yeager did in the stands is a complete lie. Well not completely, you just got your facts mixed up. He slapped Balmecedas boyfriend and ran off with his Mom.

DR. DOOM said...

Spidey,
Good thing he stole Balmaceda's first boyfriend cause than he would have never been able to hook up with the voluptuous sex machine we know as KW! They remind me of the ambiguosly gay duo from Saturday Night Live. What you think?

Plays_With_Dogs said...

Spider,

I resent you using the term Dog gone to invoke a negative sentiment. Dogs are good peace loving creatures; I have never been fond of that phrase and would consider it a personal favor to me if you would not use that terminology again. Thank you for your attention.

Spiderman said...

Doom,

So you are saying Ace and Gary are actually Balmeceda and Whelan.

I did not beleive it but upon further inspection I found a picutre on the internet and in fact it is them. If you don't believe me follow the link, you will notice that Whelan is the bigger of the two of course or should I say intercourse.

Spiderman said...

Here is a better picture of the Duo; look how tiny Balmeceda looks in relations with Whelan.

Spiderman said...

PWD,

My apologies sir.

I assure you I intended no offense; in any case it will not happen again.

Moon Knight said...

PWD,

Did that remark by the Spider really offend you? Wow. That is a true lover of dogs.

Plays_With_Dogs said...

I was not offended in the traditional sense but I just don’t like using dog metaphors in association with negative sentiments. For example I don’t like when someone says “He was like a rabid dog” this implies that dogs have rabies when in fact you are much more likely to see a rabid Raccoon. People love their dogs and they see to it that their dogs get their shots and I just think they should not be used to show examples of bad behavior. The truth is there are no bad dogs, just bad owners. Maybe I was a little to quick to jump on the Spider, but I just feel I have to fight for K-9 rights or no one else will.

Moon Knight said...

PWD,

Understood. Keep up the good work and I applaude your efforts. to change the stigma that comes with some of our traditional sayings.

Spiderman said...

PWD,

I was not upset at your post at all. I appreciate what you do; I am a dog lover as well, and I respect your advocacy. Do I think sometimes you take it a little far? Well yeah, but I am not judging you; you do what you think is right. I know dogs are mans best friend, but PWD is the Dogs best friend.

Anonymous said...

The real ambiguosly gay duo are Osorio and last years fat American coach who is all up his boyfriend's ass. Imagine those 2 in those little tights. KW is not only only a sex machine, but also the best coach in Dade County who is the A.D. at Braddock and still has time to trim Balmaceds's pubic hairs, incredible this guy is I tell you.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

Sounds like a little professional jealousy.

Are you maybe lacking a competent assistant?

Have you had to trim your own bush all this time?

BTW, I have heard of this phenomenon of male dilapidation, and I must say I have lost total touch with contemporary grooming practices. I have heard it called Metrosexual, and have also heard it referred to as Manscaping; in my day we called it Queer, but I guess it is just another sign of the times. I'm just glad I don't have to bother.

Anonymous said...

You forgot, Charlie de la Hoz. How did Phillps end up above Pardo?

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

DeLaHoz would definitely receive consideration were he still coaching. Thing is I kept it to coaches who are still in the biz. DeLaHoz certainly did a fine job and had some great success, that I remember they finished 2nd in the state one year and third the next. He also had a few individual champs like Buchman, Cineas and Mashburn. Like I said, if he were still coaching he would receive consideration, but I don't think he would crack the top 5.

Polls close today.

As an OrientalAmerican we too have loved dogs.Yummy!

Plays_With_Dogs said...

Mr. Galactus I must say that is a sick statement on your part, and it undermines everything I do to save mans best friend from the diner table. If I said it once I’ve said it a thousand times, “DOGS ARE FRIENDS NOT FOOD.” With such a large variety of plants and animals out there that would be more acceptable nutrition, K-9’s should not even be considered on anyone’s menu. People should eat fruits and vegetables and roots and other sustenance before the ever considered eating a dog, which should only be a last resort of survival, and even then I myself think I would likely die before ever tasting dog. The mere thought of eating a friend is so repulsive that I gag from the mere thought of it. My educational efforts in the Orient to curb the use of Dogs as food was successful but we do have a long way to go, especially in Vietnam. Please don’t perpetuate the idea that dogs are Tasty, or even an adequate food source, I do not appreciate you comments and sincerely hope you put a stop to your indictment of mans best friend.

In my opinion the best coach was Phillips. His abilities were unparallelled as was his friendship with Balmeceda. Now Vic pouts around the gym with no friends except Soderholm.
