Dodd Duals at the High

This weekend has the potential for some very exciting match-ups at the Ken Dodd Duals hosted by Miami High.

The American Patriots will make their tournament debut and we should get a nice feel for their standing with 7 duals on their record when the weekend is over.

Another of Dade’s up and coming teams the Homestead Broncos which boast individuals with National titles will likely give American their best test.

Don’t count out the resilient Sting and the Sunset knights, both teams are well coached and hard fighting, and have the potential to make any dual interesting.

South Miami, NMB, and Killian have interesting wrestlers in spots, but they will mostly be working to improve and re-build programs that were once formidable.

Varela comes in with few accolades, but they always seem to have one or two kids that can do damage.

All in all it should be a great weekend of wrestling.

Here are some of the possible highlights in this tournament as described earlier by KW.

#6 American vs #9 Homestead might be the best match up, but don't be suprised if #8 Sunset makes some noise.103 could have Hall, Bentancourt and possibly Harris.

You may get to see Harris and Guzman at 112.

Plus Dade County's top ranked 145 Raymond Watson (Hom)

160 George Garcia (Am)

2nd ranked 189 Tommy Perez (Am)

3A top ranked (in the state) heavy Michael Chinchilla (Sum).

See you all at the Asylum this weekend, and if you look up in the rafters, you just might see me.

Spider,

Very nicely done. I like it a whole lot. If we can get this stuff week in and week out I am sure many of us will make time to go to some of these matches. Great job.

Miami High should be exciting to watch, they have a full team with plenty of good wrestlers and should give the Brancos and Patriots a run for their money. My sources told me that American and the Brancos has holes in there lin up, unlike MH. Does anyone know the tournament's schedule? When are MH, Am, and Hom wrestling? IMy prediction is that Homestead is the team to beat. Second, American and third Miami High, the rest of the teams aren't as good. Why is this tournament named after Dodd, he's not McCoy.

Besides the 103 weight class with Bentancourt, Harris, and Hall is there any tough match ups? All the good wrestlers are in different weight classes. It's not going to be as exciting as predicted. Does anyone know any good match ups? Where are Miam High, American, Homestead, NMB, Sunset, South Miami top wrestlers It might not be worth the drive.

The duals started last year and the name was kind of an after thought. It was used because all of the teams that set up the matches had ties to Dodd. South Miami, Miami High, and Homestead are all schools he coached at. American's coach Sal Moncada wrestled for Dodd. So the name stuck.

While this tournament might lack some of the marquee appeal, if you are looking for wrestling to go watch this weekend, Miami High is your best option.

I would assume American's hwy vs Chinchilla would be good. When American wrestles Homestead there will be some good matches. Homestead might have the bigger names, but American has some athletes who have been getting fined tuned for several monthes now. Homestead had 4 of their wrestlers just get back on the mat after football finally ended.
The lightweights of Miami High should do well against the rest of the field, but they will be tested by a couple of wrestlers.

Thanks for your respond, KW last question, what day is Homestead and American wrestling.

The Dodd duals were started by Me and Miret. We came up with it because at the time there were a large number of schools that all had connections to Coach Dodd. We thought it would be cool if all the wrestlers who had wrestled for Dodd and were now coaches would get together for some duals. I did not wrestle for Coach Dodd I wrestled for Coach Johnson but my first coaching job was with Dodd. Miret was my assistant and he did wrestle for Dodd at South Miami, Tirso Valls was at Killian, Luis Gonzalez at Miami High, Coach Dodd had gone back to Homestead, Julio Martinez was at Norland, and Sal Moncada was at American. Since then Martinez left Norland and a spot was open so Sunset filled it even though there is no Dodd connection there. Other teams wanted in so the tournament grew from 6 teams to 8, and the name Dodd duals stuck because the host is always a former Dodd disciple. I had been hosting the tournament for 4 years I think, and this year there was a conflict with the week we wanted to host so I decided to let Luis have a shot at hosting. I think so long as the one of us hosts that tournament, it will be called the Dodd duals.

Once again I find myself questioning the potency of American High. It seems peculiar that Homestead with its great recruiting class and numerous returning athletes were placed so very low. Miami High and Sunset also seem better from afar than the Americans. Maybe my cynical nature betrays me but I believe the marquee match up would rest with Homestead and Miami High.

It appears that the legend has quite a few disciples around. Hey Spidey, how about a little history lesson on whom has the most disciples.

I am going to go out on a limb here and predicting that American will beat everyone in this tournament, that is "IF" they show up with all their wrestlers. Never under estimate the power of the dark side! All this sh*t talking you guys are doing about Not-so-sorrio and American only makes him angry and more focused making his dark side powers even more powerful. Mark my words they will remain undefeated this weekend!!!

Coach Pardo,

Nice to see me back on boards, I mean you, I mean... well you know what I mean.

Thanks for that explanation, it makes sense and is a fine tribute for a great man nay a Legend like Coach Dodd.

If you get the chance please get a screename so you don't have to sign your name at the bottom and so we may always know your words are your own, or at least an alias so you can participate.

CoachKW said...

Come on Pardo, get an alias. I didn't remember the name going back for that many years. I remember hearing the name for the first time during last years season. I had forgotten about the Norland coach and his connection.

I'm proud of you for remember all of those coaches names. That is so unlike you, remembering names. However, it has been more than 4 years since Tirso left Killian. You should realize that. Think about it.

It is good that it was opend up to other teams like Sunset and Varela. Gives the kids more matches.

About American, Armani Harris, Little Perez, George Garcia, Tommy Perez and the heavyweight should give American at least 4 wins every dual meet. That is a pretty big advantage. Then when you factor in some of the athletes that are still at American (like Lattimore, Johnson, and Troncoso) those should all help add to American's score.

It all depends on where all the Homestead kids seperate out to. Yes Julian Taylor, Raymond Watson and Caudry Mack are big name returners. Earl Hall, Ronald Howard and Isiah Jerigan are the big 9th grade recruits. Throw in the returning Womble, Lovette brothers, last year's 103. That line up should break down pretty well. But 4 of their stars were playing football up until last Friday night, they might not be in the best wrestling shape yet.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

That is quite the task, and I might get around to it if I choose to do a history lesson on who is coaching where. But off the top of my head, SW has Peligri, Balmeceda, Mendez, and Tejada. There may be others, but those four right there I'm pretty sure blow all others out of the water.

Anonymous said...

I don't see Homestead losing to American with all those names. That line up looks powerful. Whose little Perez and what weight class is he wrestling? Someone mentioned earlier that American had holes, what weight classes. I was under the impression, they have a full team. Maybe Coral Gables or can help.

Anonymous said...

I can't get a screen name here at school because I can't get email other than the school email and I don't want to use my school email address for this, maybe when I get home I will get one. Remembering thos names was easy all those guys are friends of mine, its kids names I usually can't remember, even my own kids sometimes. You are right about Tirso being gone from Killian but he was the original host of the Dodd duals which started at Killian I took it over when he left so it might be longer than 4 years, but you know my memory sucks. Originally the Dodd duals was just 4 teams, Killian, South Miami, Miami High, American, but it does go back quite a ways.

KW, Doom,

It seems that you guys have a lot of information on the Homestead kids. Can I assume that they were in your kids program. If Homestead has so many returners and such a huge South Dade contingent then why aren't they being picked as the winners in this match. Are you guys holding out on us.

The Devil's Advocate said...

Homestead should win it all, although Miami High may be up for an upset.

Ron may decide not to take all his boys as he usually does for most threatening events he wants to "hide what he's got" for later in the season as he usually does for GMAC. Ron, take your team because there are many good wrestlers in this tournament.

Last year Coral Gables attended and barely beat American with the same team Angel has now. Let's not use that as a gauge. OK?

Sunset is better than many think. They have gotten some good Hammocks wrestlers for the last two years and Moses does great things with his guys. Surprises are coming.

South Miami is just marginally better than last year with a few returners and a gradeless sting transfer.

Killian is Killian.

Who said anything about Homestead? I said that American was going to win it all! I don't even remember ever mentioning Homestead! I'll say it again, if "YOU", I mean American brings there whole team they should win it all comprende' amigo!

Anonymous said...

Homestead and Miami High will give American the most trouble, but American will emerge victorious from this tournament disproving their "over-rated" status. I predict that Osorio WILL bring his full team with nothing but his best and make his presence at American even more impressive.

Homestead has a team full of strong, athletic kids, but many of them just finished with football. There's no way they're in wrestling shape for tomorrow. If American doesn't give up some pins here and there and gets some pins here and there, then American should have no problem beating Homestead(the biggest threat to American).

Let the battle begin!

Magneto said...

Sounds like the Dodd Duals will provide some interesting wrestling and it seems like a middle of the pack battle. More interesting though is that Durant tourney this weekend. Southdade, Riverdale, Suwanee, Osceola, Olympia, Springstead, Braddock, Southwest...and quite a few more. This sounds like a real war. There are quite a few potentially good match-ups. Would like to have seen Sentes against Tico or Rat though. Regardless, this tournament seems pretty loaded. Can't wait to read what happens there. Also on the menu this weekend, even though not from Dade, is Palmetto Ridge and Oviedo. My money is on PR, but I wouldn't count out Oviedo yet. They still have some firepower. Wonder if they will have the firepower to take the Bucs. I know SD is stacked, but Oviedo is a sneaky little bunch. Good luck to Dade county and represent well.

Magneto said...

Another interesting note that Spidey mentioned. All three former Pelegri wrestler's, now coaches (Balmaceda, Mendez and Tejada) seemed to have gravitated to the same tournament. Hmmmh. Doesn't mean much, but what a coincidence. Numbers 1, 3 & 4 in the county.

Anonymous said...

All this talk about the Dodd Duals and there is a better tournament this weekend with tougher competition. Lets talk about the match ups in that tournament. I'm sure that SD will make Dade County proud. Go Bucs!!!

The Devil's Advocate said...

Anonymous 13,066.6

Although there may be another tournament that you find more interesting, this is still quite an event. I understand that the Bucs make many proud of Dade County, but please remember that there are many other teams to be proud of in the Dade.

Osorio is dying to make Dade pay for years of disrespect. He feeds this to his wrestlers and they wrestle with more disdain and hate than anyone. These are all great wrestling qualities.

Gonzalez works his kids hard and sets the bar high. While this weekend is important to the Stings, he has bigger plans - he will not be satisfied until the regional title goes through the High. Next year will be a better one for you.

Harris prides himself in what he is building and has the same attitude as Osorio ("The World is against Us!")Dodd may be long in the tooth, but he still wants to win more than anyone. Those young Broncos of yours have years of good wrestling ahead of them. They must be kept in your farm, careful they don't jump the gate.

The poor Cobras are still hoping for Miret to come back and help them get their venom strong. Pardo is struggling to build kids from scratch and keeps hoping for a feeder. Suck it up! Neither the Stings or Patriots have feeders that I know of, yet they seem to be building something special. It's time to start coaching again Pardo!

GMAC is still a month and a half away, districts and regionals two and change away and guess what, injuries/illness, missed weights, family dynamics, grades and many more factors have yet to sneak up on kids across the county.

There may be an "S" across SD chests, but there are also targets on there backs. Look out for the kryptonite - it's everywhere.

Doc,

I have read and re-read the many post on this topic and can't find why I said you. Honest mistake Doomie, really, don't have a cow old buddy. I guess I was talking to anonymous and KW. I am officially extending the Olive Branch out to you so we don't have to go thru a verbal sparring match over an honest mistake. You truly are a patriotic american. I, on the other hand, think that Homestead is going to win this weeked and go undefeated against their opponents.

Coach Pardo said...

It is not even hard for me to admit that you are correct. Miret and me had a great system, we complimented each other and we built a great thing here at South Miami. When he left I was left to run it alone and I could not devote the time needed to do that. I have wife and three kids of my own that I love and I would not short change them for the sake of winning. After 3 years alone I have finally found an assistant, in fact I found 2. Both Michael Castro and Victor Silva wrestled for me and they both know my system well. We will rebuild it but it wont be quick. We expected to be much better this year, but the kids we were counting on did not materialize, and that is beyond our control. Roly Ruiz was a county champ and left to Matter a private school. Our heavyweight county runner up decided wrestling is not for him after 2 practices, and the 3 others kids we got from the junior high did not make it either. 2 decided they would play jv basketball instead, and the other one is out on his play station 3 every afternoon. No excuses though, it’s my fault our program went to down, and time will tell if I can bring it back.

Spiderman said...

Coach Pardo,

That was a very sincere statement; we appreciate your comments and your candid reply. I for one am rooting for you, keep your head up, I hope soon South Miami can once again be considered among the top teams.

CoachKW said...

Moon Knight,

I have information about the Homestead kids, because I was in that district for 5 years. I ran the District tournament for 3 years and I've run the middle school tournament for several years. I have a good memory for remembering names. Most of the kids on the Homestead team came up with Coach Dewberry at the Homestead YMCA. Some wrestled at Campbell Drive for a variety of coaches they have had their in the past couple of years. Caudry Mack goes all the way back to Coach Lugo and Anguiano. The younger kids were coached by Coach Macon, Red and Dewberry. The only kid that came up with me was Raymond Watson.

I haven't seen most of the kids at one time so I don't know what weights they are all going to go.

Some of the American names that I just remembered.

Jamal Lattimore around 130
Leo Santibanez around 140
Add to Christian Perez probably between the 2, Tommy Perez 171/189, George Garica 160/171, Troncoso 215, Heavyweight and Harris 103/112 American is looking pretty good. If I remember correctly, Osorio took about 12 kids up to the Super 32. I haven't seen him since the first Southridge tournament, but I'm pretty sure that the whole team is showing up for this event. New school will bring some changes to his coaching styles.

As for all the anonymous posters, yes I agree the tournament to be at this weeked would be Durant. What is it like 7 of the top 15 teams in the State are there. The Oviedo tournament would also be good, but none of them are in Dade County. As I said in the beginning, if you are in Dade County and looking for some wrestling I would go to Miami High.

I myself will be driving to Durant tomorrow for the semis and finals.

American beat Miami soundly, dominating all weight classes but three (103, 112 and I think either 119 or 125.) It appears that the American recruiting class of 07-08 did as expected.

Nice call Dr. D!

It is a long season. There was a lot of good wrestling at the asylum. American did what a recruted class is suppose to do. These Miami High boys are a bunch of fighters. They will definitely improve as the season goes on. They wrestled every match to the last second. Great coaching being done at "The High". Tell your boys to keep their heads up. Sunset also looked very impressive, but then again, great coaching as well, Rivera always does a fantastic job. Homestead, will hopefully get it together, the team has great potential. The rest of the teams are working really hard, but right now they are trailing. I'm just happy to see that these programs are all stiving to improve. Way to go to all coaches at the Dodd Duals.

I stopped by on Sat. and I was not too impressed with the competition. Am had a full team but with a couple of wholes in their line-up, with new wrestlers and Hom were missing a brunch of the football players. As for MH they have a young team that need to get a little tougher. SS were also missing a couple of wrestlers, but looked good. Val had some good wrestlers and they are going to shock people. SM and Kil need time and experience. It was more of a JV tournament than the hype.

Anonymous said...

Some of the schools put in their JV guys Saturday. That could be the reason it seemed more JV.

Obsevations,

Durant Tournament:
South Dade places 2nd with four major studs out of their line up. That boads well for Coach Balmaceda as he goes for the state title. Metellus and Rat lose close matches. That is something to keep an eye on. Who beat them and why. Wish we had eyes and ears over there to see and hear how those matches went down. KW has Baez at 135 while the Durant brackets has Baez at 140, which is right. Congrats to South Dade for their strong showing without their full line up. South West was missing one of the twins, can anyone tell us why? Braddock was missing a twin as well, interesting, does that mean that Kitko doesn't allow two twins to wrestle in the same tournament?
What happened to Gabriel Chandler, from what I read he was pinned in his match for 5th and 6th. How did that happen. So many questions and not enough answers. Can anyone help fill in the blanks.

Dodd Duals:
Not enough results called into the herald for me to make a good obsevation. Maybe the Devil's advocate can help with the details since it is obvious that he was there. How did Homestead look, what about Sunset. Didn't South Miami have some studs that were supposed to make some noise this year? American beat everyone soundly and it looks like some want to say that they put their JV's out there or that American was a recruited bunch. I doubt that Osorio recruited 14 wrestlers and avoided getting caught in this county so I am going to assume that anonymous and Devil's advocate are crying sour grapes instead of giving credit to a very good coach. I hope Homestead gets up and gets their boys from football quickly, from the score in the Herald and what has been posted here I can only assume that they forfeited many weight classes to Miami High and American. Varela scores more points against American than all the other teams, that was shocking and now makes Varela a team worth looking out for. Once again if anyone can give details please let us know.

Overall:
Congratulations fo South Dade and American as well as all the other teams that competed and competed well this past weekend.

Spider,

Where are you? I hope you are getting the details of this week so we can have some fun talking about this.

Coach Pardo,

Maybe you can tell us what happened at the Dodd Duals. There are some rumblings about your team being very young or you using JV's instead of your real deal kids. How about some information.

Devil's Advocate,

You were there, you reported the scores that same day how about your views on what happened. How did Sunset, Homestead and the other teams looked.

Coach Pardo said...

I wont make any excuses, I took 10 wrestlers to that tournament, 9 of them wrestled their first matches ever against Killian on Friday. It was the first time in my career that a team of mine got skunked. I made a decision to get rid of some trash and discipline or suspend some others and therefore I took mostly freshman or what some might consider a JV team to the Dodd Duals. I will build it my way, old school, or it won't get done, and my best days would have been behind me. we got our asses Kicked but I was very proud of my boys, they tried hard especially since none of them ever wrestled even in Middle School. 3 or 4 of them inpressed me and if they stick with me can be special. My HWY only weighs 221 but he is a specimen and before it's all over he will be a force. He had the strength and the athleticism to put Chinchilla on his back, but not the experience to keep him there or to finish the match. He will improve.

Moon Knight said...

Coach Pardo,

Thank you very much for your candor and explanation of the events. I wish you well in your rebuilding of the Cobras. If you have a heavy then everyone better look out. There are only two coaches that have had a history of great heavies, South Dade and South Miami. Good luck and I will be watching.

Coach Pardo said...

Thank you for your compliment Moonknight, I hope I can get my HWY ready in time, he is new to wrestling but he is a great athlete and we shall see.

The Devil's Advocate said...

American appeared powerful, with a veteran lineup. They had quite a few Juniors and Seniors. Ron inherited some decent talent and made them exceptional. Adding his transfers made the team complete. The semi-close score against Varela was the American JV versus the Varela Varsity, otherwise it would have been 84-0. I do not have anything personal against Osorio as some may believe; I simply know his teams fall apart when it counts (GMAC, Regionals, etc.)

Sunset had two weight classes missing and later had to forfeit a 3rd due to an elbow injury (103?) The team appeared well coached, but maybe a little unprepared/young. There is plenty of talent on this squad, but I do not foresee them making an impact on GMAC or Regionals (besides 285.)

Homestead had a lineup that featured some experienced wrestlers, their 103 beating Betancourt of Miami High. Raymond Watson looked rusty & got pinned by Miami. American, Miami and Sunset all beat Homestead. I believe they had forfeits at 171 and 189. Lazo is not developing as he should. I think he is a Junior or a Senior now with several years of wrestling to his credit – Where’s the development? This was not the advertised powerhouse everyone expected (me included.) Hopefully the Broncos will recover and show more resolve in the upcoming months.

No apologies necessary. While there are many holding a grudge against Osorio, I am not one. I believe Dade wrestling is fascinating in the way wrestlers rise from obscurity to become true contenders. Sometimes all you need is direction. American received that direction and added some transfers to the mix. Let’s hope Osorio doesn’t overcook the recipe before it’s done.

Moon Knight,

I don't see Devil's Advocate hating anyone, but I do see him being extremely Jealous of Osorio and American's success. Those are the kids that he developed over the summer and took to plenty of tournaments. Which of those wrestlers did not wrestle for him? The only one is Harris and he was a nobody, I find out about him in the summer when Osorio made a name for him. Don't hate him, he's a good coach that puts in his time and desire to coaching. I tried but couldn't make it on Saturday, but I will definitly see his team at GMAC. Good luck

Moon Knight said...

Anonymous,

It seems you don't know Coach Osorio to well. If you are waiting to see his team at the GMAC then you will be extremely disapointed. From his history he has never brought a full contingent of wrestlers and much less his varsity team to the GMAC. You would have better luck going to the district duals to see his new team.
