Taking On The Establishment

One of the hardest things to do in history is to fight the establishment. Standing up against the establishment historically has been a recipe for sanction, ridicule, defamation, retaliation, and in some cases even physical violence and murder. I am not saying that anyone would get murdered over a confrontation with The Pirate Master and the Golden Fairy, but many of the other tactics could apply. The establishment always has the upper hand, they control the flow of information, potentially damning documents, and typically set themselves up where they could claim plausible deniability in a last ditch effort if it came to that, which it rarely does. One coach, one person, one parent, one wrestler standing against an inappropriate use of power will have a negligible effect of the establishment, in fact if they are reading any of this they are already circling the wagons for the potential attack, and in so doing crossing those last T’s and dotting those last I’s.

I can think of several reasons why a coach would not go out on the limb by himself, the people he will be facing wield a mighty hammer, and there is much more to lose in a confrontation than a wrestler, a match, or a title. A coach can (if he angers the wrong people) lose his team, his position, and his job. While losing your (teaching) job might be a little extreme, losing the position is not; many coaches are granted favor and preferable assignments because they do so much for the school with kids and with time they are scantly compensated for, but we all know $hit rolls down hill, so let me give you an example of a typical fear of the coach on his willingness to challenge the establishment.

Coach Soandso has a very good team, a team with possibilities of challenging for a title (in his estimation of course). He sees a window of opportunity VS his biggest rival and likes his chances. His rival however goes out and brings in some mercenaries; a move that completely and for all intents and purposes ends the hopes and dreams of this coach’s team to realize their championship aspiration. The coach decides to fight back against what he perceives to be a grave injustice and follows the proper protocols in doing so. They first thing he does is outline a list of grievances and any information he may have that could and should be damning to his rival. He takes this information to his advocate (which should be his athletic director) and delineates for him what this other team is doing, how they have done it, and how it negatively impacts his team and their ability to maximize their full potential. His athletic director responds, OH! I wasn’t aware of that, Periquito Perez (the AD at the school in question) is a close friend of mine, I must speak with him about this so he is not caught with his pants down. This statement completely sucks the wind out of coach Soandso’s sails and he gives in to the nepotistic and narrow view of his AD. Later he is angered by the tone of his supposed advocate and the lack of advocacy demonstrated by one who should be looking out for the interest of the student’s athletes in coach Soandso’s school. He goes over his AD’s head to the Principal who says OH! I did not know that, I am friends with the principal of the school in question; I better call her so she is not caught with her pants down. After much frustration he decides to go over the principal’s head to the director of all sports for the conference who not surprisingly tells him that the school in question has gone through all the proper procedures and the he should leave this alone. The coach involves the Newspaper and the internet, and brings forth his accusations and his proof. The feces hits the fan or so he thinks, but what really happens? The coach embarrasses the director of the Conference, however, she has a trump card, and she lays out all the information on why and how things were done and proves that she in fact was duped by the school in question. The principal of the school in question claims to have been duped by her athletic director, and the athletic director claims to have been duped by the coach, who was duped by the kids and their families. The school in question revokes the eligibility of the athletes in question and all seems well. However, behind closed doors, the director of the conference is not happy at the betrayal and contacts her friends (The Principal and athletic directors) at coach Soandso’s school and tells them that coach Soandso is a loose cannon, that he can’t be trusted and that they should rectify the situation. Coach Soandso goes on to win his title or not, but the following school year he is informed that he will not be rehired as the wrestling coach, his teaching position goes from six honors classes to five 9th grade classes out in a portable, no 6th period supplement, and 2nd period planning. He is also told he is no longer need to teach that night school weight training class, he is no longer need to work security at the football games, and he is no longer needed as the cross country coach. Meanwhile the school that was accused of wrongdoing has now had their athletes sit for a year, the coach received a slap on the wrist, the AD and principal went out and had a drink and laughed at the situation, and everything falls back into place.

If you don’t think this can happen, ask Coach Bill McDonnell, while the situation is different and the circumstances are not quite the same, many of the sanctions fit the bill.

The only way to defeat the establishment is to form a militia; get the common man and have him unite against a powerful wrong for a greater good. The disenfranchised coach, the discriminated athlete, the aggrieved parent, these must be your allies, without them you can do nothing.

I predict right here and now that nothing will come of these allegations, and the status quo will remain in place and in power
.

Spiderman,

The example you used while fictitious is in fact acurate. If someone feels very strongly about a situation involving recruiting, cheating, or what not, even though one may be right, it is best to think it through and evaluate the potential or probable consequences. If after thinking it through one feels they should pursue what is perceived to be a wrong or injustice, go ahead FULL FORCE but be prepared for the CONSEQUENCES whether the consequences are fair or not.

At the end it comes down to a person asking themselves, "IS THIS BATTLE WORTH IT AND CAN I CAUSE CHANGE AND JUSTICE". If one truly believes that nothing is going to come out of it, it may be best to leave it alone. However, if one thinks they can and strongly believes in what they are fighting for, go ahead. Heck, I believe people should bravely fight for what they believe in. But at the same time, one cannot go in it blind and not expect consequences. If one is willing to take on the potential consequences and be at peace with themselves, go for it, and good luck. It may or may not be worth it. I guess at the end it is a matter of perspective.

Sincerely, THE WATCHER

I wish I could say I get your nonsensicle verbage.

At first I thought it was going over my head, but now I know it's going under.

I have tried to elementarize my thought processies but that is more difficult than Calc 3.

Maybe I shouldn't be stating this but when a poster whether anonymous or not writes a post full of slang and many words spelled incorrectly as well as repetive profanity, many will view their post as not being credible.

In other words, it is difficult to read through the message when someone writes with a "thug" or profane demeanor or language. They may view the persons post such as "this poster is an idiot" or "that poster is uneducated".

In this case the "establishment" appears to be the athletic community-coaches and AD's. They also seem to advocate the transfer of student athletes agianst the written policies of the true "establishment" the academic administration.
Sorry Spidey I disagree with your assessment. Yes these seem like rebel tactics but I agree with the cause. Student athletes should be allowed to transfer ad lib. Remember the American Revolution was fought by rebels as well.

In the defense of South Dade and Coach Victor Balmaceda, I have to state that I have yet to hear of any allegations of his being involved in recruiting. Last year The Devil’s Advocate and Coach KW came out and defended Coach Osorio against recruiting allegations but that did not stop the chatter. Questions were raised, threats made and warnings given. In the end the legalities of those situations were proven and all was forgotten. It seems this year mighty South Dade will get to suffer the constant barrage of questions, allegations and accusations by any and all who hate the rich and powerful. We all know that ALL of those kids went to South Dade not because Coach Balmaceda or Coach Duck went to their houses and poured sweet honey in the ears of those parents. Those athletes went there to get great coaching and an even better opportunity for an individual state title. That being said the question is against the parents and kids. NO COACH will ever turn a kid around and say, ‘no we don’t want you here’. By the same token it is the responsibility of each coach, parent, AD, and anyone else involved in sports to make sure that they offer their schools and kids the best opportunities possible. I don’t think Coach Balmaceda was all too happy with losing multiple state titles to the true recruiting war mongering school up north. I am sure he did everything possible to make it known that those schools had committed infractions and improprieties in order to secure talent as well as a state title. I am comfortable saying that his and many others scream and rants of complaints fell on deaf ears.

No, Coach Balmaceda does not recruit. He doesn’t have too. 8 State Titles, multiple state champions, countless national champions, as well as numerous wrestlers in college do the recruiting for him. South Dade has a great program and many will seek to join the ranks of the Buccaneers and seek the guidance and direction of Coach Balmaceda. With their new magnet they will now have to suffer the indignities of people questioning the transfers and ‘recruits’. Heavy is the head that wears the crown is and old adage that comes to mind and fits this situation. Yes, Columbus does recruit and they will shamefully state that fact. Secure in the knowledge that they can and have crossed all their t’s and dotted all their I’s. they set up recruiting booths and now gleefully read the blog happy that attention has been diverted to South Dade and away from their secret deals and compromising covenants with parents.

All this being said, it is the responsibility of any team, coach, AD, or principal to seek confirmation of the legalities of such transfers. Is it fair, of course not. It will never be a level playing field simply because that is the way of the world. That does not mean people don’t have the right and responsibility to question or to be angered by the happenings of one simple solitary summer. Until the rules are corrected and kids allowed to transfer to seek greater opportunities in sports will this problem persist. Few understand that becoming a great athlete has less to do with natural abilities and more to do with great guidance and coaching. Even fewer realize that great success in high school sports directly affects an athlete’s abilities to move on to college and secure a scholarship. Should the rule be changes, YES. Until that day comes questions will be raised and angry fists thrown down on helpless keyboards. Live with it.

Isn't it funny how only good wrestlers transfer? If it's legit and above board hows come you don't see below average guys transfer? I guess they don't want the same good coaching? Also it funny how they always seem to be in just the right weight classes. If Brandon or Oviedo or Columbus or any public school outside of Miami they are cheaters. If it's South Shady, different story? Hypocratic, no?

Anonymous said...

I don't think you will be hearing the South Dade folks accusing other programs of stealing kids or recruiting anymore. Dr. Doom and his cronies would constantly bash and make sarcastic comments about Oviedo and some of the other programs.

Where is DR.DOOM? Mission accomplished therefore no reason to whine and complain anymore?

bad wrestlers do transfer, but it only becomes an isssue if they become good wrestlers.

or any wrestler that transfers to a good coach or program gets burned. good kid goes to bad program nobody cares.

Never heard of either a bad kid going to a good one or a good kid going to a bad one! Only good one's going to good programs. Say again - depends on the program as to whether you think its recruiting. If you like the coach probably not. If you dont probably is.

Not a good example using McDonnell. He made a living stealing Edison's kids while at NMB.

NO MOAR TALK TILL TINMAN IS FOUND. I have heard that I am and idiot for speaking in the manner in plain spectacle above. As for the issue, yes, illegal conductions are probably being done but, we can sit here all day and moan like preggo school girls and do nothing, so, if it makes you lose sleep at night, go on a life mission to prove said suspect guilty and find the verdict to this whole situation.

anonymous (with top 10 favorite coach list),

I agree with your list. It seems as if those 10 coaches on your list do not seem to cause any waves and work with the cards handed to them. With the exception of #4 Pardo, I cannot think of any coaches on the list being accused of recruiting.

As for Pardo, I know that some has accused him of recruiting in the past with Kakrah and Castro. But that is totally false. Heck, Kakrah had to sit out his junior year for going to South Miami. Castro belonged at SM the whole time. It seems that at the time he was developing quite a few good kids and people wanted to throw stones at him and discredit him. As far as I know, he doesn't play that recruiting game.

But yes, I have to agree with those 10 coaches that you mentioned.

Anonymous said...

yeah agreeing with that list too, seems pretty solid

In case you missed it I did rip SOUTH DADE for their magnet and Balma-Solo's ability to now recruit. You are so blinded by the fact that you think I am "B" or one of his coaches that you must have missed it. My biggest grip about recruiting has always been that Oviedo was built on recruiting plan and simple, while Brandon and now as you mentioned South Dade built a program first and then started benefiting from people wanting to go there because of their reputation. There is a huge difference.

the thing that gets under my skin the most is i think we as coaches sometimes it is all about the kids and there life after hs wrestling in most cases that is where most of the coaches hearts are at for most we want are kids to be the best on the mat and after there hs wrestling is done but in some cases it is not the kids it is the coaches ego all you have to do is look at at what happen to the kids after hs how many are able to make the next step.

Wrong guy dude. But nice try! Just because your boy is now doing the same thing as all those you hate dont go gettin all defensive! And if you truly believe Brandon was not built off the backs of transfers, then you haven't been around as long as I thought and don't really know whats up! Brandon from the early 80's to 90's got guys to go there through their own magnet programs. I can look on their walls in the gym an rip off names of guys who transferred there long, long ago. Can you? Bhwaaahahahaahh

Watcher,

Good point about Kakrah, I do remeber him missing a year and wondering why he was not competing, I remember I thought he was injured but later found out it was because he had transfered and was ineligible.

Funny thing about that is that Kakrah likely had a legitimate cause to transfer because the was some inappropriate behavior going on at Killian at the time, and his parents no longer wanted him there.

Of course the ralationship between Pardo and Johnson (who had been Kakrahs coach) previous to his Sophomore season, is the reason for his transfer to South Miami. If I am not mistaken I believe the 8-track turned Kakrah down and he had to sit a year.

Thanks for the pertinent cruise through memory lane.

By Trib I assume you are talking to Coach Tribit formerly of Winter Springs and more recently of Kissimmee Osceola?

If it is him I welcome him to my site and I am glad he is participating regardless of his opinion.

It would be nice to see more Orlando and Tampa people on here, I would be happy to write more about their Regions if I could get some credible information.

Anyone wanting to converse with me in private or send me information they would like me to post on my site simply needs to send me some correspondence either at my private box on FKu where I am known as iamspiderman, or to my private email at spiderman_fkn_wrestling@yahoo.com

Surely it's just a lot of masturbating of the ego going on over there.

"Oh Johnny is so good, he is going to win states this year"

AAAAAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!

I hear Mr. Lawton himself in no longer in charge over there, which would open the door for my return, but I am having so much fun over here that I would not have time. Except for this sites inability to allow individuals to start their own thread, this site kicks the others ass, starting with the graphics, and ending with the commentary.

Never fear, there are plans in the works to expand this site. I am in back room negotiations with a former adversary to put together something as vividly exciting as the site I am on right now with the flexibility of the other site. It may take some time so don't get too excited, but it is coming soon enough.
