DISTRICTS!

The Road to a State Title Starts Here

District 13 is in the books and American clobbers all others with 11 finalist and 7 champions. I eehhhuummmm... Osorio is doing a great job at American if I do say so myself, especially considering that American has never smelled a district title that I can remember, and Osorio pulls one out on his first try.

Dist. 15 is today, I'll be there for the finals unless they go straight through and finish before I can get there.

Dist. 16 is tomorrow, you know I will be in the seats early for that one. Can't wait!
No reports from dist. 14, but I think it's today and I think Miami High pretty much has that one on lock.

Keep your eyes open, you just might catch a glimpse of your friendly neighborhood Spiderman, though you may not even know it.

District 14 takes place tomorrow at Miami Northwestern. District 16 is also tomorrow at Miami Killian. District 15 is today at Braddock.

Any reports from Dist.15 would be appreciated, I need to know if I can make it there in time foir the finals.

We ran through the tournament and were done with the awards by 5:30. Columbus took a 40 point lead after the semis and ended up winning by about 25. Braddock had a great showing in the final round winning 9 of their first 10 matches, including 5 head to head matches with Columbus. Columbus' big boys closed the deal for them winning their final 3 matches. Columbus went 5 out of 14 in the final round with wins coming from Mark Gulesin (Champ), Kevin Gurevich (3rd), Abadin (Champ), Rabaza (Champ), and Wethy (3rd). Braddock beat Columbus in 4 Finals matches: Gabe pinned Nodar, Montoto defeated Rio 15 - 8, Villalobos defeated Pena 11 - 5, and Medina pinned Cruz. In the Consi finals Noriega defeated Howard.

The Braddock twins both won District titles as the did the Ramirez twins from Southwest.

Braddock had 5 champs, Columbus had 3 champs, Southwest had 3 champs (Torres at 160 was their 3rd), Coral Gables had 1 champ (Montero for the 2nd year), Sunset had 1 champ (Chinchilla for the 2nd year) and South Miami had 1 champ (Castro in the only overtime match in the Finals).

Columbus advanced all 14 wrestlers and Braddock advanced all 13 that they brought.

Congrates to Columbus, American, South Dade, and Miami High. Now is when it really counts;separate the men from the boys. With knowing the results from all the different districts and how many qualified from each team, here are my predictions for top 5 teams at Regionals.
1. SD- it's a given
2. SR- many heavy hitters
3. Col- full team;cheap pts.
4. Bra- 13 qualifiers, major pts
5. Ame- 10 qualifiers, hurting

Agree? Disagree? Comments?

Congratulations to Miami High and Coaches Luis and Andy (My Bro's in-Laws.) I am proud of what you have accomplished.

I am especially proud of Eddie Gomez - District Champ as a Freshman! Good job Eddie!

I totally agree congrates to Miami High and the coaching staff. Luis have gone a long way and all the hard work is paying off. Sad to hear what happen to Guzman, great wrestler and person overall. I'm extremely glad you guys beat the shit out of Hialeah. Your Truely

What happen to Hialeah? I know Osorio left a pretty good JV team and a couple of studs. Is that new coach and Alfonso that bad? I knew that program was going to fall apart but not that fast and bad.

Can you please post the detailed results from the SD districts?

THINK SMART!

For those of you that think SD is falling apart, think again. Balmaceda is not only one of the best coaches in the state, but he is extremely smart off the mat. And don't think KW is still not helping him out with all the technical stuff. What do you think is most important to SD? Qualify as many possible, win regionals and win states correct, oh and putting themselves in great situations. 103, by Villanueva taking 3rd he ends up on a weak bracket straight into the finals away from Harris, guess who has Harris. SD will beat Noffo at regionals. 112, If Mcperson takes anything else but 2nd he has Chandler. Guess who he has now, exactly, no one until the finals. 140 Fontaine, is away from Parrado, he is now in the finals. The best one of all 171, King takes 4th no way. King is away from Perez American. Now we all know none of this means anything, you still have to wrestle and win, but I'm pretty sure Balmaceda will rather take his chances on this format than any other. Also, I don't think this is unethical or wrong, just great coaching because he gets the kids to understand the big picture and they trust him. Think about it, SD just set themselves up for success. Another question, when was the last time SD was so banged up? Exactly, they have the best coaching staff, SD doesn't get banged up unless they want to.

Whooo! niiice. This is so true watch how next week these guys are miraculously healed and they'll be on fire.

Anonymous said...

Who mentioned anything of SD fallen apart? Columbus and American are the only two teams that seems to be fallen apart towards the end. SD will put in their middle school kids and still win Regionals. Balmaceda knows the formula for Regional, and States and he is smart enough to put his kids in the best position to go to States. What ever it takes!

Anonymous said...

If you knew how to read you'd know that the post was giving SD credit. Know one is questioning that the will win regionals. The point is that Balmaceda continues to come with innovative ways of putting his guys in the best position possible. Now, go and learn how to READ.

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty sure the South Dade 140 will have to face Montero before he gets to finals - could prove to be a bit more challenging than Goleman's kid.

Anonymous said...

And not to say that Balmaceda wouldn't think of throwing matches like that, but judging by the way those kids looked after finishing the majority of the matches you described (specifically King losing to Palmetto and Villanueva losing to Coral Reef) I wouldn't say any of them lost on purpose.

My picks for the region 4 4A wrestling tournament.

103- Even though I picked Hall to win GMAC'S and I was correct. I am going to pick Harris to win regionals.
1- Harris(American)
2- Villanueva(South Dade)
3- Hall (Homestead)
4- Noffo(Coral Reef)

112 1- E.Chandler(Braddock)
2- Quint MCPherson (South Dade)
3- Wilson (Palmetto)
4- Barreras (Miami Springs)

119 - Gabe Chandler just keeps looking better and better, I might just have to pick him here in regionals as well as in Lakeland the following week.
1- Gabe Chandler(Braddock)
2- Josh Williams(South Dade)
3- Ronel Lubin(Southridge)
4- L. Nodar(Columbus)

125 1- James Williams(South Dade)
2- Mario Montoto(Braddock)
3- Jake Rio(Columbus)
4- Perez(American)

130 1- Nates (Hialeah)
2- Metellus(South Dade)
3- Gulesian (Columbus)
4- Ramirez (Southwest)
* I think Morales SR will stay home. After seeing him wrestle in the last 2 finals, I am questioning this kids heart and desire. Good wrestler, little heart. Should have stayed at 125 and probably gone and placed at states.

135- 1- Baez(South Dade)
2- Ramirez(Southwest)
3- Santibanez(American)
4- Gonzalez (Miami High)

140- 1- Montero ( Gables)
2- Parrado ( Goleman)
3- Fontaine( South Dade)
4- Perez (Sunset)*He is wrestling good right now.

145- 1-Sanders( South Dade)
2 and 3rd Villalobos(Braddock) and Pena(Columbus) depending on the brackets.
4- Watson (Homestead) If he wrestles well. He may stay home if he doesn't step it up.

152- 1 Montalvo (South Dade)
2
3
4

160- 1
2
3

171- 1 Perez (American)
2- Castro ( South Miami)

Did the 145 Clarke and the 125 Perez from American make scratch weight prior to districts? I know you can't just make it in districts it has to be done before.

Anonymous said...

I don't think Osorio will risk having those 2 kids wrestle at that weight class if they haven't made scratch weight at least once.
Good move by Osorio though.

I have to agree with one of the above post about Joey Morales. The kid is losing in the 3rd period by a few points at districts and does not attempt any shots or throws to try and win the match. His coaches must have alot of patience, because I would have been all over his a$$ after the match.

Anonymous said...

you must not know osorio. not that he would do it intentionally. maybe he just thought that you can make weight at districts alone. i don't see any coach coming on here saying that one of those kids made scratch weight when american wrestled their school.

Anonymous said...

Good point, coaches should look at their alpha sheets, scorebooks etc. This is why refs should input the weights themselves, in pen. You know all kind of shit goes on this time of year. Someone's kid might be left out because others did not make scratch weight.

Anonymous said...

Isn't the ref suppose to write the weights himself? Why would they let the coaches do it? Does not make sense to me. Where are you Spidey. What is your take on all this?

Moon Knight said...

Anonymous #1

Why do you say that American is falling apart? From what I have read they had 11 in the finals with 7 champions and a district title to their name. Do you know something we don't.

Anonymous #2

Columbus falling apart? Maybe just maybe Coach Husk is playing the same game as South Dade and now his kids are on a better bracket. Just something to think about.

Anonymous #3

Balmaceda is a true genius and know his strategy but I agree with you that those kids looked like they were really beat and not acting. I'm sure they will be back and maybe even on the good side of the bracket but I don't think all of those loses were strategic.

Anonymous #4

(Damm this is getting tough, get an alias already)

A lot of coaches make the mistake of cheating on their kids weight ins. Unless I am mistaken there were some issues with a Homestead kid trying to make scratch weight at the district tournament. I would think that most coaches have all their i's dotted and t's crossed but I am also as sure that there are coaches out there who missed an I or a T somewhere down the line. It remains to be seen if there will be a coach that will challange the weight ins of kids or if they will let the wrestling decide the outcome.

Anonymous said...

Coach Mendez did the right thing with Olivera. He is a class act and should be recognized. He understands the big picture. How much longer do you continue to let the wrestling just take place and see what happens? Coaches will continue to just play as if they did not know or simply take a chance because they know that no one will bother to ask. You know what, no one will probably challenge Osorio and the kids will wrestle, I hope they do, I would not like to see them suffer because their coach does what he does. I just don't think people should be coming on here saying that he is a great coach and all this nonsense. A great coach does thing right thing, no matter what, even if it means your best guy has to sit or wrestle at another weight class. Anonymous 3,454 said it best, someone's kid will miss out because of the idea of "just let the wrestling take place". a

I examined the region brackets and there is not one South Dade wrestler on any line is by any reason other thatn that is where the master wanted them. Every move by South Dade is coldly calculated and that is why they are the best.

WRESTLING

Coach Ron Osorio believes his wrestling team at American has the pieces in place to be successful and return to dominance.

"The answer to getting American back on track is toughness and discipline," Osorio said Thursday as his team won their first District 13-3A title since 2001.

After back-to-back district championships at Hialeah High, and four titles out of the last six years, Osorio and coach Yoemniz Baez set their sights on bringing a tradition of district titles to their new team at American. Both knew their team was young and inexperienced, but Baez admitted Thursday that his athletic team is coming around.

"All of these guys are wrestlers and love to work," he said. "I remember just coming in here, taking the job, and knowing that these kids believed in us as coaches."

Besides taking the team championship with 231 points, American also won seven individual titles.

The Patriots -- who got wins from Armani Harris (103), Chris Perez (125), Nicholas Clarke (145), George Garcia (160), Tom Perez (171), David Castillo (215), and Henry Chrino (HWT) -- are now in position to make a huge run at the regional and state titles.

Moon Knight said...

Anonymous,

Thank you but a little late for that update. The Spider already told us how his...ahem...American did in their district. Nice article though, I didn't catch that on the herald.

Spider,

How do you feel about scratch weight and the culpability of coaches and the responsibilities of other coaches to challange.

Spiderman said...

Moonie,

Unless I am mistaken, Olivera also won the TOC tournament in Orlando at 103 lbs, and reports from there told me that he looked great at 103.

Moon Knight said...

Spider,

So why did anonymous post the following:

Coach Mendez did the right thing with Olivera. He is a class act and should be recognized. He understands the big picture.

Why post such a comment. I was under the impression that Olivera never made scratch weight and that is why Mendez did not allow him to wrestle. Now it seems that somebody is wrong about his weight and his making scratch weight.

Spiderman said...

Moonie,

If I were a coach and I was convinced a coach was cheating by not having his kid make scratch weight previous to the District tournament and that his dropping to a lower class could potentially hurt my wrestler, I would definitely make it an issue. Not doing so would be a disservice to my kid who sacrificed and did things the right way. I would of course give the coach advance warning that if he tried such a stunt I would call them on it. But just to get the facts straight, your kid and doing things properly take precedence, and anyone who believes that their wrestler might be ill affected by another wrestlers (or his coaches)unethical practice should have the balls to confront the cheater make his case and let the chips fall where they may.

Spiderman said...

Moonie,

Olivera did in fact make 103, furthermore, making 103 automatically makes him eligible for 112.

Whoever it is has some bad information, or more likely is making it up on the spot. My insider tells me that Olivera could not make 112 where he was seeded for the Dist. Tournament, and was then scratched from the the tournament rather than allow him to go up to 119.

Anonymous said...

anonymous never said that olivera never made 103. he just said that mendez did the right thing.

Moon Knight said...

Anonymous,

You are correct but he did make is sound as if that was the reason he did not allow him to wrestle. If that was not the reason then why should Mendez be recognized for doing the right thing with Olivera? What happened?

Anonymous said...

This whole mess can be solved very quickly. If you are a coach and one these wrestlers came to your school or you went to theirs and they weighed in at the scratch weight before districts, while you witnessed it. Then just come out and say, yeah that kid made scratch weight I was there, the ref that was there saw it too, it should be in the alpha sheet. I don't think that will happen. Because I think Anonymous 4 or 5 is correct. When are the coaches that are teaching our kids as well going to learn.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

I think what you propose is ludicrous, the cheating would be more rampant because coaches would just get together and say I will approve this kid for you and you approve this kid for me and some back stage deals would be struck. That would solve nothing; in fact it would greatly exacerbate the problem.

Anonymous said...

The bottom line is this. Did Perez and Clarke make scratch weight at 125 and 145 prior to the districts? No one has seen Osorio come on here and defend his case, you know he is on here reading all this. If they had he would have said it a long time ago.

Anonymous said...

Not to take credit away from Miami High but district 14 has to be the worst district in the state I'm only saying this because of all the congrats comments being dropped with comments Insulting Hialeah well as the comments about Hialeah sucking i would give anything to see a coach come here an start a succsesful program this school is loaded with crap in every way shape an form. Osorio has the midas touch when it comes to wrestling as everyone can see how he is doing in American. Ponce brothers and Alfonso are great coaches but no kids in Hialeah come out to wrestling so dont insult us when most schools have middle school programs, Youth programs, a large coaching staff, Money Money Money, and 40+ kids trying out for the sport so please dont insult or point out any negative comments about me, my school, my team mates, or coaching staff

sincerely yours

I don't believe Osorio wrote this, however, that is a damn accuarte impression from what I hear.

Anonymous said...

If Nates did write this, congrats. Way to speak up. Understand this, every school goes through what Hialeah is going through right now. Whether they are in your district or not. It takes a lot of hard work to establish a program. Ponce will get it right with time the same way many others have. Keep your head up and good luck.

Anonymous said...

I think it is Nates. Way to speak up boy. I know that I'm not alone when I say that if Osorio had stayed at Hialeah then Miami High would be celebrating their second place trophy. Keep your head up and focus on regionals and let these people congratulate everyone they want. Ponce/Alfonso will have a team ready for next year.

Anonymous said...

First comment to make any sense all day. Osorio already turned American around and if he were at Hialeah you can bet they would have repeated as district champs. Come regionals everyone better watch out. He will piss on everyone.

Anonymous said...

Last year at Regionals there were rumors of two coaches that were going to be challenged at a couple of weight classes. It was all a rumor and never happened. But no one had the balls to challenge anyone. If Osorio did something illegal and morally wrong which I seriously doubt, challenge him and look and feel like a dumb ass. Osorio is too smart and wouldn't jeopardize Perez or Clark from competing at Regionals. Especially when Clark would have qualified at 152 and Perez still won't qualified at 125. My point is that majority of the coaches are ball less and won't stand their ground and challenge what is wrong. I'm curious to see who might grow some balls by Regionals.Good luck.

Moon Knight said...

Anonymous # ?,

Although I would agree with you that Osorio wouldn't risk a mistake with his kids you have to admit that mistakes do happen. I'm not one to point out mistakes made but they do happen and maybe this is one of those cases. Now why challange just Osorio when there have been a number of rumors about other coaches. It seems that you are personally affected by the move of those two kids. Mind giving us some details.

Anonymous said...

no coach is going to challenge, not cause of lack of balls, but no one really cares, coaches in dade are nice guys.

Anonymous,

I guess you haven't checked out the other blog spot before this one. It has been talking about other coaches waiting in line to see who would challange Osorio so they could step up and challange other coaches about their weigh ins. It is really sad to see people come on this site and post challanges here knowing that all papers and paper trails can be changed and mixed up in such a way that all are covered. I remember way back when there was a coach who actually had eraser marks on his sheets and I believe white out as well and yet he passed the inspection by his peers and officials. It was a 'Comedy or Errors' if you will. If I was to have challanged Osorio or any of the other coaches I would have waited until regionals and then challanged them. By coming out now you simply gave those coaches who didn't cross their I's or dotted their T's (play on words Mr. Grammar, just word play), a chance to change and adjust their papers so as to be legal. I also agree with the Spider that coaches do back each other up in many cases. It may not be fair or legal but proving such things is extremely hard. What official truly knows who weighed in where and when. Needless to say that all of the officials won't be there to collaborate their signatures or weight ins. A tough task to hoe if you ask me.

Anonymous said...

Yea, there is always the argument about making scratch weight at least once and so on. Even though the rules are in place for people to follow, What I feel really matters is for the wrestler to make weight at the tournament.

If the weight class in regionals is 105, as far as I am concerned as long as a kid weighs 105 the first day and 106 the second day he made weight. Same in states, 105, 106, and 107.

Anonymous said...

Spiderman,

You stated that if a kid dropped and never made scratch weight and it could affect your kid you would make an issue out of it? You would do so even if you knew that the other coach has supporting documents that he made it, even if in fact he never made scratch weight.

I understand your position on looking after your kids best interest, but now what do you do if you knew for a fact that the other coach was cheating, yet his records indicate that he made scratch weight (yet you and the other coach knows the kid didn't) and smiles and says "here you go Spiderman would you like to see any other of my kids proof of their scratch weight" and smiles at the same time sort of letting you know, nice try.
