I believe he got 5th he lost to the Alvarez from Miami High to go for 3rd and 4th.

Anonymous said...

so Alvarez lost to Montalvo and took 4th. shouldnt he be second team all dade then?

Anonymous,

I have checked my records and in fact you are correct, Alvarez did defeat Starr in Lakeland and was the higher placer, it should be him on the second list team. My apologies, I will rectify it A.S.A.P. Thanks for the correction. If I made any other errors please feel free to cal me on it, I would rather be notified that I made a mistake so I can correct it, rather than to let remain ignorant to it.

Once again thank you for point out my oversight.

Starrr never recovered from the russian

c'mon this is wrestling you got to be able to battle back from a loss its part of the sport. lots of wrestlers lose the first one in lakeland and know that there chances of becoming a state champion are over, some quit and some battle back and move on to place. thats what wrestling is about. not making an excuse like you couldnt recover thus not giving credit to the guy that beat you after your loss.

Spidey,

Really good list. There is only 1 that I might change.

Second team 215. Nothing against Davis of South Miami, but I would put David Castillo American on the second team. GMAC Runner Up, District Champion, State Qualifier. I think he would have won a match at state (just like Davis), except that he tore his knee in the placing match at Regions.

Anonymous said...

I think you need executive of the year. After all KW does run two teams now.

KW,

You may have a point there; I selected Davis because of his 3rd place finish at the G.M.A.C., his 3rd place finish at Regionals, and his win at states.

Selecting Castillo would have been a judgment call and I pretty much went by the stats.

I understand that Castillo and Davis only faced off once and that Castillo injury defaulted, but I had to go with Davis because he has that win over Castillo even though Castillo got hurt.

Although I may believe that Castillo could have and probably would have won that match had he not been injured, I would like to keep my personal and subjective opinion out of it and go strictly by the numbers.

The only subjective selections I made were the wrestler of the year and the Coach of the year, and for that I pretty much went with what the poll results were.

chwrcoach,

If wrestling had an executive of the year award, KW would get it every year, he would dominate that category like no other, and when he retired they would call it the KW executive of the year award.

I know you were trying to rib him, but I think they guys does a phenomenal job and wrestling is lucky to have an advocate like him.

Kevin is the man. I want to go on a binge with him. Kevin remember the bachelor party I was well you know.

Kevin goes to bachelor parties? Does he take his laptop with him?

CoachKW said...

Spidey,

You are wrong about Davis and Castillo only wrestling 1 time. They wrestled in the GMAC quarterfinals and Castillo won by tech fall. If my memory serves Castillo was undefeated going into the GMAC Finals and ended the year with only 2 real losses, both to Willie (GMAC Finals and Region semis).

chwrcoach,

Yes I do run wrestling for the GMAC, but insuating that I also am in charge of 2 teams is taking a shot at the fine coaches (both made Spidey's top 5 canidates for Coach of the Year) that run those teams. It is my pleasure to help give the wrestlers the credit they deserve when they place at GMAC and Regions. I also enjoy making sure that the coaches only get bigger (fatter), by keeping the hospitality room well stocked at GMACs. But, I no longer run ANY teams, the last one I ran was Homestead Middle. Both Balmeceda and Tejada have been successful before I started coaching and they will continue to be successful now that I no longer coach.

Spiderman said...

KW,

I was not aware of that, my memory does fail me some times, and appreciate the correction. I will replace Davis as second team All Dade with Castillo.

As you now,I usually agree with most of what you write but I must take exception with your choice of young Mr.Hall as Wrestler of the Year.I feel that that award should have rightfully gone to Rodrigo Baez. Before anyone attacks me for my opinion,I will say;Chill out, assholes!I have seen Earl wrestle and could not have been more impressed, moreover I have seen what Mr.Dewberry has done for years and feel that he is a true point of light.
Having said that,Tico is most probably, the best wrestler to ever come out of Dade and his record this season bolsters that opinion. It is true that Earl is the new sensation, deservedly so.But taking Tico's body of work including this season.he is the deserving one.I am sure that Earl will receive many multiple accolades in his career, but this one this year should go to Tico.

Spiderman said...

Galactus,

We of course can agree to disagree and remain not only cordial to each other but also friends.

I think I described my criteria for wrestler of the year pretty well, but I will state it again and try to clarify. BTW, this is not the Herald, the Herald will likely select Baez as their wrestler of the year, and this is just the Spiders lair selection.

I think wrestler of the year should not consider the body of work of previous seasons, only what was accomplished in this season.

I think the wrestler of the year should be the one that left the biggest impression on the wrestling community this year not throughout his career.

And I think the wrestler of the year should be the one who was most impressive considering the obstacles that were placed in front of him (I.E. Opponents)

Under those criteria, you can not conclude other than that Earl Hall is the wrestler of the year.

However, if you were to use criteria such as most dominant wrestler, most pins, largest margins of victory, etc, then Baez would undoubtedly be the wrestler of the year.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I picked the wrestler who left the biggest impression on me "this season", and that was undoubtedly Earl Hall. But I have not qualms with anyone who disagrees and prefers to think it was Baez, he is certainly deserving, and like I said, I think he will be the selection for the Herald.

THe Miami Herald is full of sh_t, they make lots of wrong choices because they don't have people who understand the sport making decisions or letting themsleves be influenced by their sentiments instead of by the facts. In 2003 the best wrestler in Dade County was Javier Estopinan but the Herald selected Alain Herrera because he was a 3 time state champ never mind that he did not win his own district or the GMAC and had 3 losses on his record while Javi was a perfect 55-0 state champ. There reason was that Alain "Deserved it" They also mentioned that Javi would have a chance to win it the next year. That is bullsh_t but okay. The next year guess who was wrestler of the year. Not Javi, it was Marino Eatman. Not that he was not deserving, but Javi was an undefeated state champ just like Marino, and had a tougher road because he had to beat a stud like Abner Nunez the state 2nd placer 6 times that year. The Herald said because Javi was going to be overall athlete of the year that they were going to give wrestler of the year to Marino. That was a lie too because Javi was not athlete ofthe year, he was co-athlete of the year with a guy from Carol City who was not as deserving but he had pull because he was a football player from Carol City. To add insult to injury, last year at the All Dade Banquet I look in the books first page and see all the athletes of the year listed except guess who does not appear on the line for 1994. That's right, Javier Estopinan is not even mentioned, just the guy from Carol City.

F_ck the Miami Herald!

Anonymous (wink, wink),

Dare I say that I think I know who this might be? I think we have alwasy known that the Herald has always been full of sh!t coach. the All Dade has always been the wrestler who places the highest at the State tournament (except when it involves a Buc). Some coaches have a huge influence on the rankings as well as the all dade selections and those are the ones that the Herald calls to ask. Most times those coaches do a decent job of stating the best wrestlers in the county but every now and again their personal feelings come out and they sucker punch a deserving kid just to include thier kid in there. Remember back when little Ponce was supposed to win the state title and won every tournament except the state tournament? After his emotional loss in the Semis he then wreslted like crap (due to his heart being taken from his chest). He was still the best wrestler in the county and yet was not all dade. Don't get too hot my friend they are idiots who don't really know much about the sport. Take you to another situation a couple of years ago. Coach of the year honors were given to the Belen coach for his Frigger brothers when it should have rightfully had been given to Balmaceda. All we can do it sit and bear it. Do what I do, boycott the event and instead go have breakfast on the beach with the waves and ocean breeze hitting you in the face. Hell, I will meet you for a cold fruity drink and some luch. LOL.

Anonymous said...

Thanks moon knight, I do get a little steamed at the Herald when I think of things like that, and the situation you described with Ponce also happened with Mike Castro. A wrestler he had beaten 3or 4 times placed higher after a broken hearted castro was defeated in the Semis and placed only 6th. Whatever man it's not worth thinking about at this point.

CoachKW said...

Moon Knight,

It was Oscar Martinez of Archbishop Carrol that was awarded Coach of the Year when his 2 wrestlers each won State Titles. Vic's took 7 and placed 7, but he didn't have 7 champs. I didn't agree with it either, but the Herald trys to share the wealth.

I don't remember the Ponce situation exactly. Did he lose to anyone in Dade in Consi Semis or Consi Finals?

That is what happened to Castro. Castro SM and Perez Brad traded matches all year long. 1 won Districts and the other won Regions. The problem with Castro is that he lost in the semis, then lost to Scotty Diaz of Winter Springs in Consi Semis and then lost to Damaso Munoz of SOUTHRIDGE for 5th. Aldo Victor of South Dade beat Munoz to go for 3rd and then beat Scotty Diaz for the 2nd time in the State Tournament. Castro was the 3rd highest placer in Dade and lost to 1 of the Dade county kids. I don't remember if Victor and Castro wrestled, I know Aldo lost to Perez a couple of times. But Castro was not the BEST Dade wrestler in his weight hands down. That was part of the problem.

I know it sucks, but many places won't give a Sport Athlete of the year to someone winning the Athlete of the Year overall. That way they try to give more athletes recognition. Now if the name was left off of the 2004 info, then I would be pissed as well. I agree that it has kind of become a career award, I remember hearing how could they not give it to Allen Herrera all the other 3 timers got it their senior year. I think when comparing 3 Undefeated State Champions, you have to look at the career to break the tie. Baez and Plain are all deserving. Throw in 1 loss Chinchilla and Nates and 2 loss Rat, and these are only the seniors. Add junior 1 loss Kendrick and undefeated Freshman Earl. Imagine next year's award with some of the juniors that are returning.

Anonymous said...

Castro did not trade matches with Perez, he was 3-1 against Perez, his only loss to him was in district Tournament, he beat Perez in the District duals, the GMAC and the Regionals. He was 3-0 against Aldo victor. HE WAS 2-1 against Munoz with his only loss to him in States. He was 3-1 against Scotty Diaz from Winter Springs beating him at Lyman, Jarzynka, and LakeMary and then losing to him at states. He was Region and GMAC champion and was broken hearted after his loss in the semis because that year we took 4 to state and 3 of them made the finals, he was devasted and lost 2 matches to guys he had beaten multiple times before. No excuses, that's the way it went. Which is fine except that When Rat lost to Espinosa last year they still found a way to put him on the All Dade list even though he did not win the state and someone from Dade finished higher. More needs to be considered when chossing the All Dade Team, Aldo Victor was All Dade that Year and never beat Mike Castro.

Anonymous said...

Some people think that Espinosa shouldn't even have been allowed to wrestle the state series with all of the back and fourth crap that went on that year! Rat was put on as "Utility" anyway, you don't think he deserved that????

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

Actually, I did not want to argue this side of it, but Espinosa was allowed to wrestle because ultimately he went back to his home school. Because of the situation you described it could be argued even further that rat was unworthy of being All Dade even as a utility. After all, he lost to a wrestler that had less than 5 matches by the time the District tournament rolled around. Unless I am mistaken, his final record was like 15 - 1 or something like that. So he beat Rat in the state finals, and al that under pressure from a season or turmoil, uncertainty, and upheaval.

Moon Knight said...

Spider,

I have a question that has been buried for a long time and maybe you can answer the question. If the Goleman had in fact been recruited by Hialeah, then why was he not only allowed to transfer mid season but allowed to wrestle. Why wasn't the Head Coach of Hialeah penalized, fined, or punished? I have always suspected that there was more to this story than what was known. Maybe you can help fill in the blanks.

Spidey,
U R wrong! If a wrestler starts the season at school A and mid way through the season returns to school B he is ineligible reguardless of wheather that was his homeschool or not. Once the season has begun you can not change school even with a change of address.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

No sir you are wrong, a corresponding change of address is the only way to get eligible after the season has started. If I have time later I will research it and send you the text straight out of the FHSAA manual.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

Her you go! No offense, but it always peeves me when someone talks out of their ass without actually kow ing a rule. Please make sure whenyou decide to quote a regulation that you are correct or I and likely many other will call you on it.

"11.3.3 A student who, after initially enrolling in, or engaging in an athletic
practice at, any school during a school year, moves into a school community with
his/her parent(s) or other individual with whom he/she has lived continuously for
a full calendar year and subsequently enrolls in a new school as the result of that
move, shall be eligible the following week so far as residence is concerned. The
student shall be eligible on the sixth day following his/her enrollment."

http://www.fhsaa.org/rules/handbook/

Page 56 if you still have doubts.

Anonymous said...

The whole thing was crooked and illegal. Any move during the season would require a section 4 review and appeal. The appeal never took place, the kid was found to be illegally enrolled in Hialeah which in it's self should have deamed him ineligible. Like many things in DADE COUNTY The whole thing was brushed under the rug and a kid won a state title that wasn't even suppose to be wrestling. Lets not pretend that nothing illegal happened.

i've read and have visited the fhsaa website...and the fhsaa guidelines are followed yeh ok...there are rules established but they are not enforced come on we all know that.ok i take it back followed for some not for all.brushed under the carpet yes i agree by queen goldenruler and her entourage at the fhsaa.HAHA!
