The Polls Close, The Results Are In

The results are in, and we have a tie…

It seems there were two equally disgusting and unethical practices according to the Lairs readers.

A distribution of 42% voted for believing that in fact using a fake address to gain entry into another school known as the “Brooks Ploy” is the most unethical practice one can undertake. I agree with this one, and yet it is the most oft used maneuver to get a wrestler in your school which does not belong.

Equaling the “Brooks Ploy” in matters of unethical behavior was the “Palmetto Method” the practice of fastening a Visine bottle to your genitals in order to cheat the hydration test and pass. Another 42% of you felt this was a blatant act of unethical behavior. I also agree with this one, it is a clear cut circumvention of a rule, regardless of your opinion of the rule itself, it is a rule.

The third most despicable act was the “Balmeceda Breach” where one purposefully defaults a match in the quarter finals to jump to the other side of the bracket for a favorable match-up and a better shot at making it to Lakeland. Personally I believe this is the most benign of unethical acts since there is clearly no set rule to prevent this from occurring, it is more an implied matter of coaches honor and the spirit of competition and so forth. Nevertheless, 15% of you felt it was the 3 most unethical act of the choices allotted.

The fourth most unethical act according to our readers was the coach following a wrestler to a school having previously informed his wrestler where he would be transferring too, otherwise known as the “Osorio Maneuver,” Again, I find this to be the next least benign breach of ethics, since technically it is not breaking any rules, I don’t even like the rule that a kids can’t follow his coach. Coaches put a lot of work into their wrestlers, and if they chose to move or are forced out, they should have the option of bringing their wrestlers along assuming the parents can provide transportation to and from the new school. I think Osorio played this one very smart and outwitted the establishment and their stupid and archaic rules. Still, 10% of you felt it was unethical.

The fifth most unethical thing to do was the Academic transfer to a private school from Magnet also known as the “Noffo Ruse.” I have a hard time finding anything wrong here either other than some recruiting implications that have never been levied. If a wrestler chooses of his own volition to uproot from a program and move to a private school, well I don’t see anything wrong with that at all. Only 9% of you felt that was unethical.

And finally the sixth most unethical thing to do is the magnet transfer after your freshan year otherwise known as the “Hankerson Ultimatum.” I would have put this one a little higher, I believe unless there are extenuating circumstances, athletes should remain at the school where they started their freshman year or lose a year of eligibility. Only 3% of you found this to be unethical, but I would have had it as third right after the “Brooks Ploy”

Thank you all for voting on this poll, and I look forward to your submissions for the next poll to grace the pages of the Spiders Lair.

The real "Balmeceda Breach" is the one he commited against himself this year - losing his ethics in favor of his vanity. Be gutsy enough to look in the mirror and call a spade a spade. One of the things you used to be able to admire about Balmasolo was his uncanny ability to groom his kids into champs and compete year in and year out. Now, it's as simple as - If they can do it, why not us. It's no different then the "Aquinas Addendem", the "Columbus Code", the "Cozart Codicil", the "Robbins Rule" or the "Pettineo Principle". The only difference is one of our own doing it now. New T-shirt: "South Dade-Keeping up with the Robbinses, I mean Joneses"

Aside from Coach Varona's kids/pupilswho everyone knew was going to South Dade, who are you accusing him of recruiting ? Wilson Metellus, no arguments from me on that one. But the Homestead wrestlers were told that their coach had applied for the Coral Reef job. What should they have done, waited until the principal @ CR gave them an answer? Before you attack someone's character, have all of the facts first. Was Balmaceda supposed to tell those Homestead boys to go back to Homestead once they knew that their was indeed coming back ? Whatever your feelings about Balmaceda are, be fair in your assertion of the present situation.
I'll admit, he is no angel, but he is also not the demon that you are portraying in your post.

Anonymous,

OUCH! As much as I like SD and Balmeceda and the product that they have put out year after year, my indiscriminate persona forces me to agree with your summation.

When you are used to winning state titles year in an year out and here comes JD Robbins and his army of parents and lawyers to thwart your legitimate pursuit by any means necessary, it then becomes necessary to accept that you can not win without mimicking their actions.

Pride is one of the seven deadly sins, and pride can lead one down the path to the dark side. The Irony is that SD had their shirts to mock what Oviedo was doing, and they like the rest of us celebrated the Ocheeto shirts that proliferated Lakeland in derision of Oviedo’s practices. Yet now SD finds the Ocheeto tag on themselves and I’m sure they will deny and justify and attempt to explain away what is apparent, but no one will believe them any more than they believed Brandon Hatchett really had some family crisis that landed him at Oviedo.

So I would not be surprised to see some mocking tee-shirts in SD’s future, I’ve even got some good ideas my self, feel free to use them.

SOUTH SHADE – If you can’t beat-em, join-em

SOUTH SHADE BUCCANEERS - The Plundering Magnet

SOUTH SHADE

One ring to rule them all, eight rings to find them, the promise of a ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.

That last one is my personal favorite, it is the actual quote (with a little twist) from “The Lord of the Rings” but the words quoted are eerily pertinent to this situation. If I were Balmeceda, and knowing how arrogant he, is I would make this shirt myself and add insult to injury.

Other Anonymous,

Justify it however you want, the FHSAA and the GMAC have rules, and the rules are being circumvented; yes the i's appear to be dotted, and the t's crossed, that does not mean everything is legit, it only means they were good enough to cheat correctly.

That the Homestead coach made it evident that he was leaving has little to do with the facts. The FHSAA does not allow transfers based on a coach leaving. Now don't get me wrong, I agree with you in principal, a wrestler and his family should be able to decide for themselves what the best situation is for them and freely make that choice. Unfortunately, the rules do not allow for this distinction, and while others are not able to get away with these practices SD seemingly has no problem doing the same. It seems the rules are for some, but not for others, if you are going to have rules have them for all or don’t have them.

Anonymous said...

If any of the Homestead wrestlers violated a FHSAA or GMAC rule to wrestle for South Dade then I feel that they should be punished. Bogus addresses ...... whatever the case, they should be punished. But if the parents transferred their child to SD within the rules, then let's just shut and let the kids wrestle. The kids were faced with the possibility of a new coach or no coach at all, and the parents did what they thought was best, with a little coaching I'm sure.. If they didn't do it correctly, then I think we all agree that they should have to deal with the consequences.

Moon Knight said...

I've tried not to chime in on this subject but in the end I guess we all have a point of view. I say give South Dade, Brandon, and Oviedo, Cardinal Gibbons, Columbus, and any other school that allows for the sheer magnitude of transfers, recruits, or magnet kids to walk their halls, a private war for a private title. All of the other schools should just call it a a career and stop coaching. It is not fair for the kids, programs, nor coaches who work their butts of and will never get a fair shot at a title.

Moon Knight said...

Since they are trying to do away with sports in high school they should start with football (NW), then proceed to Baseball (insert school here), then to wrestling and so on. Every sport has schools that recruit and schools that kids want to play or wrestle in. Since the fairness is not there then sports should just be eliminated right?

Moon Knight said...

I guess that is not the best option for anyone. So, stop complaining and start training do your best and feel good about your product. In the end that is all we can really do in this life. In the end we all come home to a wife, kids, and family. In the end all this means a little less than our comforts and self image at home with the one's we love and care for.

Moon Knight said...

Everyone will defend their camps and explain how everything is legit and obove the table. No lines were crossed, nor ethics smeared. They will babble at the top of their voices in defense and wash away any guilt they may have been perceived in doing. I say leave it alone, it isn't like anyone down here was going to win a state title anyway's. Who could of, would of, should of, challanged South Dade this year? Columbus? Yea, right. American? Not likely. Anyone else here in Dade? Then let's leave it alone and cheer on South Dade at the State Tournament. Shake their hands and pat them on the back with a hearty congratulations and WOO HOO for Dade County yet again.

Anonymous said...

why should someone cheer for sd if they are trying to win a title themselves and they can't because a bunch of schmucks down south can't coach a winning program without cheating. i say we call the migra on all of them.

Anonymous said...

If the Homestead coach is not doing anything about it then why should anyone else care.

Anonymous said...

Why don't somebody email this info to the GMAC or the FHSAA. Atleast spidey's blog address so that they can read all this.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

That is not the way the GMAC works.

The only way to get something done is to file a formal written complaint through your AD and principal.

But Spidey you say what the big deal, sounds easy enough.

Well...

Here's the catch, the AD network is as good ole boy as can be, they are all old friends and they all watch each others back, the principals network is even tighter. So rather than do anything about it, they will call each other and warn each other about forthcoming allegations so that i's are dotted and t's crossed and no one gets in trouble.

If you are a coach, eventually you learn that you don't make waves; you don't take on an AD, and don't ever for the life of you especially if you want to keep your teaching job take on a principal.

How do I know all this? Simple, for 10 years now I have been the confidant of a number of coaches who used me and my site to vent through me and have me voice publicly the very things we are talking about. At the end nothing gets done anyway, and they know that, but at least they get to see in print the injustices being committed, and they know that though noting is done everyone is aware of the situation.

Spiderman said...

There is one other way I forgot to mention; you camp outside a wrestlers residence and digitally record him coming and going from his home in the morning, and returning after practice in the afternoon. You do this for several weeks and you document it all with time stamps on the recordings and such. Then you anonymously submit the tape and various copies to The FHSAA, the G.M.A.C., and the Miami Herald; Help me Howard, the region office, and the Superintendent with a brief explanation of what it is they will be looking at. The checks and balances of the Media covering the scandal will leave the G.M.A.C. with no recourse but to act rather than be exposed in some cover.

There are many ways one could proceed in defense of ones self against this behavior, even anonymously; but there are friendships to be lost, relationships to be severed, and stigmas to be attached. In the end one must either have the mettle to act, or shut up, eat $hit, and go without, there are no two ways about it.

Stop complaining and do something, or shut your yap and live with it.

Anonymous said...

By the way, all those recruited kids from South Dade should not be allowed to wrestle.

Anonymous said...

Let us look at some of the particulars of this South Dade turn to the darkside.

I Varona and R Rojas - 9th graders entering a magnet program. That is the same as all the kids that go to Coral Reef, also Alan Gilman from South Miami, and any other freshman that enterred the magnet program of any high school. That is not recruiting!

A Montero - 10th grader into the magnet program, approved by the GMAC. If you actually think that Vic has pull, think again. AETRAC approves who they want, hell they have denied principal's kids before. From what I've heard Montero would have sat out a year like Ford, Kakrah, and that big kid from Krop (That pinned Herrera, when Herrera was a senior). That kid got lucky!

E Hall, J and A Eddie (Taylor) - went from one school to its neighboring school. This is the same as the De Armases from Coral Park to Southwest and back. The Castros from Southwest to South Miami, Garcia from Hialeah to American, Harris from Krop to American, Vargas from Krop to South Broward back to Krop, Dingle (Franklin) and Lundy from South Miami to Palmetto, Brooks from Palmetto to Killian to Southridge. And those are just some of the big names, there have been countless other "average" wrestlers that transfer between neighboring schools. The question is do they have legit addresses or fakes? If they have actually moved, why should Vic turn them away if they are legit?

I haven't heard of anyone changing their race to transfer into South Dade. I don't know of anyone being videotaped living out of the wrong house.

Hell A Eddie has went to 2 middle schools in his last 2 years and now 2 high schools in his first 2 years. Is it that unbelievable to believe that the family moved?

C Grajales moved into the Brandon district for his kids to belong there, as have Timothy, Berridge, and countless others, is it that unbelievable that Dewberry would do the same thing for his son, especially that he heard the coach of his son's school might be leaving?

Did Vic coach any of these kids over the summer on a travelling team? Did any of these kids "follow" a coach to South Dade?

Did any of these kids parents get a divorce so they could get an address in the right school zone?

Have any of these kids been through the court system to place them in a "house" in the South Dade area?

Remember that the state has different rules regarding transfers. The FHSAA is a lot more lax about summer transfers. They are looking for more of the follow your coach, AAU team ending up at 1 school.

Anonymous said...

Gee anonymous, I mean Kevin, that was a very impassioned plea on behalf of your ole' buddy. No, Vic didn't coach any of those kids, BUT, a bunch of his 'assistant' coaches did and they were in the same club this summer! Bet a certain someone in Gainesville didn't know that. Or for that matter, a certain someone in the Admin. offices in Dade. But then again, maybe she did. Ooops, did I say that outloud?!?!? Word on the street is Hall was originally denied admission to SD, then miraculosly 'found' and address in SD's district. So, despite the denials of all the t-shirts and your people, starting with Prince, there's really not much difference between SDade and Ocheeto, Brandon or any of the other usual suspects. By the way, doesn't Dade's rules specifically prohibit transfers to magnet programs after their freshman year? Hmmmm. no pull huh?!?! I know this much - soooooo much has been made about how Dade County has much more ethics than other areas of the state (mostly by spidey and moon knight beating the drums) and how it's sooooo much tougher to 'transfer' in Dade than other areas. But the FACTS are that its much easier! Noffo, Pena, Prince, Hall, Varona, Mettulus, Espinosa, Gelusians, Ford, Kakrah, etc., etc. The list goes on and on. Be a man about it and admit to the fact that we're no better than those we have mocked over the years! Then again, Ocheeto did get two kids from the same school in Broward county this year and Brandon got two kids from other staes that went to Fargo with Florida, then ended up in Brandon. Gee, where have I heard that one b4. Hell Varona sent his best kid to Brandon and they even had a kid live with a coach who was fro Puerto Rico! Then again, I reserve the right to be wrong....

Anonymous said...

What about the dreaded "hold your kids back for 2 years so I can be athletically better rule" If you can drive a car in the 7th or 8th grade it's wrong. These grown ups wrestling at states at 19 years and 9 months is ridiculous. Grajales might as well be in college as well as Sanders and Chirino. Letting a kid wrestle for whom he want's to pales in comparison to holding a kid back for an athletic advantage.

Coach Pardo said...

I am braking my own rule by posting on here in defense of myself beacuse its probably only going to bring more attacks and its the reason I dont post too much but here goes anyway.

The castro family has always lived in the same place since their sons entered highschool without giving you the exact address, 67th ave and 16 street. My old assistant coach Moncada lived across the street from them when Joey Castro was placing in the sate for South West, I had a pretty good team of my own since we finished 2nd in 2000 and 3rd in 2001, and Joey could have made those numbers better for us. But I have always felt that if a kids does not want to be on my team then thats his loss. I never said anything about it, and I never complained that he was living in my area but goin to South West. 2 years later the father had a falling out with the coaching staff and brought Mike Castro to us during the summer, knowing he lived in my area I still told the father I would have to talk it over Joel Mendez because he and I are friends and I wanted him to understand that I had not recruited Mike away from them. coach Mendez can confirm that this is exactly what happened.

As for Kakrah, his parents were unhappy with some things that had gone on at Killian and wanted him out, he came here out of area and took his punishement by having to sit a year.

Alving Franklin started out living in South Miami but moved out his Sophomore year, he did not want to leave so he came back for his Junior year. BY his senior year he had problems with the football coaches which was his first sport and he decided to goplay for Palmetto where his new address was his senior year.

The year we took 2nd in the state I had 5 qualifiers, 4 finalists and one placer, Shropshire and Smith both lived walking distance from the school, Gabe Estopinan lived near Flagler street and 62nd, Horacio Rodriguez came back From his Dads in Marianna to his Mom's on NW 7th street and 57th ave,and Danny Fernandez who lived by West Miami moved during the holidays to just outside of Tropical park. By contrast, the team that beat us had three transfers, none of which belonged to them, all three state placers, and I new all of it and never said a word. I have never wanted kids to get hurt in the process, so I never turned them in and made an issue because I felt that the kids were the ones who would suffer, but as a good friend of mine pointed out to me by not hurting someone elses kids I hurt my own because we could have won a state title. So I told some of my close friends in the sport what I am going to tell you now. If ever again I have a team that can compete for a title and my team is clean as it has always been and your team is standing in my way with dirty tactics, I will do everything in my power to bring you down wether I am close friends with that coach or not. I likely missed my opportunity but I will not slip like that again if I should ever have another chance.

Anonymous said...

Coach Pardo,

That was very detailed and well explained. One can almost say it was 'Spider' like. Are you saying that if anyone believes a fellow coach is doing something wrong that they should smear the coach just to help your own team win?

Coach Pardo said...

Spider like I like that, I dont mind that at all and after I learned to deal with the allegation years ago. I learned to do what KW does and that is take it as a compliment. I am not telling anyone else what to do. unfortunately I have not had very good teams lately and I am fully responsible for that, and everyone knows Vic and I are friends, but what I said before I said to Vics face, and also to Osorio, and to Husk since we were the four present when I made those comments. I was not giving anyone any advice, especially since people in glass houses really shouldn't throw stones and for this reason I think South dade has little to worry about not to mention that Vic is way to smart to get caught doing anything wrong.

Well said Pardo. There need to be more coaches with balls out there. Lets just see if the balls are placed on the table when it really matters. Just place them right up there, nice round pair of balls sitting on the table, and say who wants some of these balls. Go ahead try that shit and watch me slap you across the face with these hairy balls.

No matter what is said, done, or alledged, the sad fact is that nothing will be done except for cornering the administration into a must act situation. Lay the proof on their desk as well as on the desk of the state organization. Just remember the Mcdonel rule, you will pay for what you say and do. All those years of hearing South Dade, KW, Spider and the lot accusing Brandon, Oviedo, Cardinal Gibbons of wrongdoing and demanding them to just come out and say "YES, WE DID AND SO WHAT!!!". Now we find people telling South Dade to do the same. Why is KW still defending South Dade? Isn't he at another school?

Anonymous said...

Because KW has no self respect. Everyone keeps blowing hot air up his a$$ and he loves it. Now someone will come on here and defend him saying he does so much for wrestling and bla bla bla. That is not the point.

Anonymous said...

Coach Pardo,

HMMMMM.... you said, "I said to Vics face, and also to Osorio, and to Husk", all three of the coaches who's schools are fighting for the prize at the end. Coincidence?

Osorio: Too much baggage. After the past couple of seasons being accused of recruiting and being under the microscope, he won't dare confront Balmasolo.

Husk: Glass house? Hell, Glass Mansion, Glass Car, Glass Toilet, Glass (insert pun here). What is he going to do? Give up his kids just to get after Balmaceda?

Most already know the insides of these matters and they have not acted on them. Maybe they know something we don't and thats why they just staying quiet.

I have not shied away from being critical of what is going on at SD these days. Did you miss my polls?

I have made the point in the past that Miami teams especially the better teams always have and always will attract transfers and the like, in other words, hell yeah they recruit.

I have been critical of South Ridge for past actions, and also of Columbus and American, and now South Dade. You obviously have not been reading what I have been posting or you would not make the mistake of portraying me as someone who is trying to cover anything up.

Before you lump me in with anyone, check your facts and re-read my posts lest you appear an idiot.

If commenting on the ‘Balmeceda Breach’ or any other views of cheating, recruiting, etc are what you all plan to do for the next few weeks, then by all means do so. But the fact of the matter is that kids want to win and ‘The Ring Is the Thing’. If transferring to South Dade, Columbus, or American is going to do that and possibly increase a kids’ chances at winning an individual or team state title, then the kid (and parents) should understand that he will be under increased scrutiny for his actions.

Many under the anonymous title come on here and rant and rave about Coach Balmeceda and all he does, but truth be told, he keeps kids out of the streets and makes a very valiant attempt to keep them in the classroom. The South Dade/Homestead area isn’t exactly a place of glitz and gold, so taking in a kid and having him wrestle for you and possibly find him a niche in some college someplace is a good thing.

There are always two sides to a story, so in hopes of getting both, maybe Vic will add some humor on here and let us know how certain ‘new’ wrestlers managed to make it into his room.

Paladin Coach said...

In my humble opinion, Vic (as well as any other coach- Osorio, Husk, etc.) owes nothing to anyone but his wrestlers. As things fly out of peoples mouths and onto their keyboards, they are preparing for another run at a state title. Those that have dirt - file your papers, do what must be done - but in the end, South Dade is a state contender - even without the recent transfers.

Cry “B” a river

If it were your son
You’d send him their first.

But you didn’t know if he’d be allowed to go, no
So you took a chance
And made other plans
I bet your glad South Dade is a magnet school now, no?

Now there is a chance, that coach B, will get twenty
And don’t it make you sad about it

If you really do want to be

Then you better get mommy or daddy
