The New Poll Is Up

This poll was provided to us by one of our interested readers, and I though it would be a great poll to encourage discussion.

We are all aware that there are certain unethical maneuvers that take place year in and year out; some are more dastardly, others are more benign, but my interest is to see if there is a general consensus, and if some moves are determinedly more egregious than the rest.

I look forward not only to your votes but also to your comments.

I think that defaulting in the quarter finals of the regional tournament is a strategy that the coaches use. I don’t know why some people consider this an immoral act.

I don't think anyone would suggest that it is an immoral act. What is in question is whether or not it is ethical.

While my initial response would likely be in the affirmative, I would also say that I believe most good coaches would do it to advance a wrestler that is victimized by the Bracket formula.

Definition of immoral: violating moral principles; not conforming to the patterns of conduct usually accepted or established as consistent with principles of personal and social ethics.

Same thing isn't it?
Why is it in question? There are no rules in the rule book that say otherwise. I have never seen a wrestler have to act like he got hurt to forfeit a match.

Anonymous,

It is a good point you make, it does not specifically break any rules as you said.

However, I think the question is does it break the coaches code of ethics which do not include any set rules per say, but rather the embodies the essence of competition and fairplay.

I think here in lies the answer to the question, but once again it will depend on perspective and the specific pro's and con's of a given situation.

Ultimately if your decision is something that you can live with, that does not keep you up night, that does not make you question your actions, and that does not deteriorate your love for the sport and that does not become a personal dilema, then have at it.

Anonymous,

Who is Matty?

When did I pick on her, and what did she do to me that I should leave her alone.

I don't understand, is this post directed at me?

Other anonymous,

I don't know where I'm going, but I am this year and one more year away from retiring from wrestling. Where ever I go it's a pretty safe bet that my team will be whooping your teams a$$ pretty quickly, I mean who ever heard of American wrestling before I got there.

You know what...

I know exactly where I am going, I am going to Lourdes Academy where I am going to have an all girls team the will whoop every male team in the county except South Dade because I got it like that.

Thanks for your interest.

I believe that competitors should compete to their utmost ability in a sportsmanlike manner to obtain the best possible result in the compitition(all competitions).

To deliberatly fail to do so is not a "moral" delema as much as a weakness in one's character. Yes, to shank a competition for a future seeding/bracking or whatever does require a low individual moral standing but this is simply demostrative of the aforementioned weak character (But in today's society I am sure that someone tells the competitor how "proud" they are of him/her.)

The root is simply a weak ego (probably that of the coach, parent {mentors} now taught to the child/adolescent/teenager/etc.). It also taints any competition it occurs in as much as a tainted ref (like the South Miami Tourny, a shoulder five inches off a mat does not make a pin, but I digress). It is trult insidious as the authority figure candones it, it continues. Aww fug it....deft ears I am sure.

The authority figure at the South Miami tourney and the individual who made the pin call that you are crying about are one in the same. Mr. Humberto Miret hosted the USA wrestling tournament at the South Miami Recreation Center. All of the other officials graciously volunteered their services for a good cause.BTW, the word is "condone" not "candone", you JACKASS.

Thank you for the spell check. Word Perfect would be proud.

You apparently saw the "call" as you identified the ref, which I delibertly did not. I will send you the video if you so desire. Almost as comical as is your name calling (which goes to my original point, charachter, honor, sportsmanship, guiding the next gen, deft ears....).

AND. the reference to "authority figures" was not to the parenthetial comment of the particular "call". As I parenthentically said, "I digress". The point is that authority figures that candone (damn spell check still not working) encourage athletes to engage in the behaviour that is the topic of discussion.

I, as all who attended, thank South Miami Club and well as its leaders (Miret for one)for the event. If you have ever been involved, it ain't easy.

You are the same individual that comes on this site to not only publicly critcize wrestling officials for their poor calls/judgement, but you have also crossed the line several times using the "race card' to attack someone's character. After you are finished ranting on this site, you show the video to your coach, he does not see the terrible injustice that you see and then you apologize for your statements on the fk.net web site. At no time did you come on this site and make that same apology. No official I know in Miami-Dade county would intentionally screw a wrestler. Bad calls are made in every sport, but there are no excuses for your comments when your wrestler loses.
Cardinal rule in this sport that we all love, if you don't go to your back, you will never get a bad pin call...... Your video will only show the angle that you are filming from the corner, an official laying on the mat surely has a different angle of the pinning situation. I wish your wrestler luck, he seems to be a good kid with a lot of potential.

Race card?

On a lighter note; how did the tournament go? Any good matches?

anyone have any real information on the American job? How much does it pay and is there going to be a teaching position?

The tournament went well. There were plenty of good matches. The matches for the little-ones were fantastic. These kids are truly gifted. The future of our sport is secure in their hands.

Thanks go to Miret and company.

All,

Oficiating is a thankless job, that's all there is to it. If you get all the calls correctly, good you're supposed to, that is why they are paying you the big bucks. God forbid you miss a call, for if you do, you are an SOB, you suck, and you cheated the kid. I have the utmost respect for officials and their duties but I have no idea why they would subject themselves to the abuse. It's no wonder that there is a shortage of officials.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

The American job is the real deal. Coach Osorio has made it clear that next season will be his last. He is looking for a coach that can come in and take on the JV duties with the idea that once coach Osorio steps down the sitting JV coach will step up and become the head coach. The pay is based on whatever salary a teacher makes plus the supplement which I beleive in Dade County is a little upwards of 2k.

Good Luck!

Paladin Coach said...

Agreed. Truly thankless. I wouldn't do it.

except that fat ref that couldnt score anything rite. coaches were yelling at him cause the scores were all messed up every match. i know he trying but he sucks
