Upsets, Overachievers, and Other Treats

I've said it many times year in and year out for that last ten or so seasons; there is no tougher tournament in this state (except the state tournament) tougher thatn the G.M.A.C.

Year in and year out wrestlers with a top rankings fall to wrestlers with little or no accomplishment to their name. It is a tribute to Dade County and the strength and level of wrestling that this occurs on a yearly basis.

Just look at the facts,

Chandler (119) the top ranked wrestler in the state is nocked off by a wrestler who does not make the top five in the state poll.

Luis Montalvo the number 1 ranked wrestler in Dade does not even place.

Travus Webster is knocked out with what looks to be a serious knee injury after a toe to toe battle.

Noffo knocks off McPhearson but is then dominated by Harris.

OX knocks over the state champ and made it look easy.

It truly was as it always is, a memorable G.M.A.C.

I totally agree with you, Spiderman. An early Regional tournament, in my opinion. About 2 and a half weeks before the real Regionals, but will the same upsets happen again? I doubt it. Gabe Chandler will win it. Parado didn't win GMAC last year either, but he went on to win it all after. I expect him to do it again this year. Montalvo had a bad tournament, but I'm sure he'll qualify and be one of the tops kids in his weight class once again. What happened to Webster is a shame. Losing him only makes the 189 weight class even weaker than it already is.

Anonymous said...

wow I was just complaining that there had been no dicussion about the GMAC.

I thought it was a great tournament. A real shame what happened to South Dade's 189. How serious is it, is he out for the whole year. That would hurt them in a major way at the state tournament.

Is American going down to 2A and if they are what other schools are going down with them.

I'm sorry but it seems that Ramirez can put the same kind of whooping on Parrado every time. He completly dominated Parrado.

Barrera has a history of doing really well at the GMAC but then not so good at regionals. I would like to see him qualify but I don't think it will happen.

What happened to HML? I thought they were going to do great but I only saw on of their kids in the finals.

Palmetto looked as if they were ready to make their tri-nual rush to the front of the standings but then fell way short.

Columbus seemed ready to challange the Bucs for supremacy but floundered in the second day. For some reason it just seems that their many accomplishments just can't seem to justify their talk of greatness. It seems that they always come up short in big times.

The officiating was great. Maybe an official here or there made a horrible call but overall they were very good.

Hall is impressive I'm happy to see him dominate. Does anyone else matter?
Harris is wrestling well but will it be enough with McPherson and Guzman on his tail? Noffo got lucky against McPherson then got stuck by Harris. Overrated. He might not get out the regionals. Guzman had 2 tight losses but expect him to be a different wrestler at regionals.
Barrera give me a break, I would not be surprise if Chandler pins him at regionals. Someone in the top four at g.m.a.c. will not be going to states. Look for Miller to maybe be in the finals.
Espinoza has planted himself as the #2 guy and that is it. Chandler will win his 4th regional title. Loved the way Espinoza beat down Montero though.
I don't think Olivera will beat Gulisean at regionals. This is something Columbus can be proud of. Don't overlook Perez he might be in the finals with Gulisean
Jake rio had a tough loss. If he wants to beat Metellus he is going to have to be more aggresive. He can do it but he can't wrestle scared. Metellus is looking sharp. needs to stay on track if he wants to win it all.
Enjoy it while it last Ramirez. Forget Parado you might lose to Nodar. I do expect Parado to win it all. Sometimes you need to get your a$$ kicked in order to wake up.
Sanders, Sanders, Sanders.
Bell, Bell, Bell.
Starr has no competition.
171 what. If I wrestled 160 I would bump to 171 and win the whole thing.
Castillo will go untouched.
Wiggins vs who. I think the only one who can beat him at this point is Pardo.
The roids are kicking in you better run Wethy.

Anonymous,

This tournament though not as meaningful might be tougher than the region. It's nearly a true 32 man bracket with the best 9 wrestlers seeded. Even the state tournament does not seed the top 8.

I do think chandler will vindicate himself, however, I think OX is in a zone and Parrado is introuble.

Anonymous said...

why isn't anybody talking about villanueva? He is a contender and if we go by last weekend the top dog at 119!!!

Spiderman said...

Other anonymous,

I think Websters injury is serious, or so it looked, he left in a knee brace, never a good sign.

I hard the rumor of American going to 2A and that's good for them because I also heard the rumor that Brandon is coming to 3A.

I agree with your perceptions on Ramirez, Parrado, and Barrera.

HML looked haggered, they were not crisp at all, in fact they looked worn out, not a good sign for this time of year.

I agree also about the officiating, there are one or two weak links but for the most part it was on the money, best I can remember. All the coaches out there need to personally thank Mr. Wilbert Johnson for turning one of the worst crew of officials just 5 or so years ago into one of the
best.

Anonymous said...

Thank you Wilbert. You are the best. But take Mister's advice and brush up on the rules. You do a great job, but I believe there is always room for improvement. As a whole the officiatating was good. Maybe HML was tired because Borgen was drilling with them from 6 am till they cleared the mats. Let the boys relax and they will wrestle better. Do all your preparation in practice. And yes Brandon is coming to 3a thank the lord thank the lord.

WHERE ARE THE COLUMBUS SUPPORTERS? WHERE ARE THEY I SAY? Come out to playeyeye...playeyey..... (ala the warriors movie)

Oh Esplorers....comeout to playey....playeyeye

Anonymous said...

Officiating is not an easy task. I really enjoy reading this website. But it seems to me that the officials do not only need to brush up on their rules books and mat skills, but that they are not doing a good enough job of recruiting the best officials in our Miami-Dade County wrestling community. In June 2009 please go to the fhsaa.org site and register, then contact Ms. Golden or go the gmac.dadeschools.net site and bring your expertise to our meetings make the GMACWOA even better. Looking forward to hearing from you and also maybe learning a thing or two in the future.

Anonymous,

The Columbus supporters are where they always are when things don't go as they foresaw. They are busy writing their new list of excuses. Not to beat a dead Cuda, but Noffo at Columbus is remarkably the same wrestler as he was at Coral Reef. What happened to the promise attached to the sales pitch? Oh yeah, the same thing that happened with the pitch made to Rio, and the Gulesian boys. The grass may be greener at Columbus but the singlets still only go on one leg at a time.

Spideysorio

They should all go to American. Osorio will make them champs in one summer.

Anonymous said...

I’m not making any excuses for Columbus’ performance……..I just said that they need to work harder in the wrestling room. Noffo has improved from last year he would not of beaten McPherson last year. The education at Columbus cannot be compared to any public school that is more important than wrestling. No wrestler is going to make a profession from wrestling. Education is paramount. I could send my son to S. Dade or American but his education will take him further than wrestling.

Mr. C

Anonymous said...

Mr. C get your head out of ass. Remember this little blog
I'm writing here. Let me know where all of these Columbus wrestlers go to college when they graduate. And then we will have other coaches come on here and let us know where thier kids are going to college and we will compare. I will bet anything that the Columbus wrestlers will not be going anywhere out if this world. Stop using the education excuse. Any A.P. course in a public school is just as good if not better then the ones in Columbus.

Flinchum is the worst official, I don't know how Johnson continues to let him official GMAC and Regional. He should only be allowed to official middle school matches.

Osorio don't count on American going 2A while Brandon is in fact going to 3A. One thing for sure, South Dade will never see another ring in Barmiceda lifetime.

The Chandlers will be top dogs at Regional. Barreras are known for upsets, but never do anything at States which he will qualify. Villanueva had an excellent tournament, good luck to him. Will he show up at Regional? Parrado got treated like a step child in the finals. He should have transfered to Osorio over the summer and transfered back a month before the State tournament like Espinosa did.

Is South Dade recruited class falling apart? Where was Eddie? Why is Meltellus always running away from competition? He has not improved since his 10th grade and transfering to South Dade.

Osorio I expected your team to do better since you finally brought your whole team to GMAC. Is that all you got? Besides these 4 weight classes, 103, 130, 135, and Hwt, Columbus has nothing. They also suck! All I know that the quality of wrestlers that Dade are producing aren't the same.

Anonymous said...

You want to compare. Davis Columbus 171 last year is at the Naval Academy, Abadin going to Bryant where is Rat or Tico? Not to knock them they are only the products of their school. You got to be kidding me you want to compare.

Mr. C

Anonymous said...

I agree the officiating sucked. They had to send 2 officials from Sarasota because they cant officiate there own tournament. Dewberry cheated Molina out of takedown points, and the bald sarasota official was no help when he was right there and saw it. The referee with glasses was prety good but the bald ref was too nice to the coaches and did whatever Husk said. Johnson should have refereed more and officiated in the finals.

Anonymous said...

Jay Flinchum's lowest test score in 14 years as a FHSAA oficial may be 96. To say that he sucks is an embarassment not only to the person who posted the comment, but also to this site. Without the efforts of Mr. Flinchum, you probably wouldn't have the vehicle that seperates Miami-Dade wrestling from the rest of the state. That vehicle is Middle School wrestling where you want to banish Jay to. Agreed he has his flaws, but don't we all ?

Anonymous said...

southridge looked pretty tough at the gmac all but 2 kids placed...

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

It is more likely that Osorio will go to Columbus than having any Columbus boys go to American. Osorio will be a free agent after this year, but the lure of the cross and the hassle free aspect of recruiting could be a nice inducement to get him to reconsider. If I were the Columbus athletic director I would certainly have Osorio on my radar and on my short list to replace his daddy Darth Husktor.

Other Anonymous,

So you say Noffo has improved from last year, Ok I'll listen, where is the proof? Don't just tell us, show us, give some examples, who are some of the wrestlers that he defeated that he could not have defeated last year. You can't just make a statement and have it be valid based on your word or personal observation, give some concrete evidence so that we may be convinced.

Anonymous said...

Noffo use to keep it close with Harris, but now it's either a major or pin.

Anonymous said...

Agree, Metellus is another wrestler that hasn't gotten any better since he tranfered to South Dade.

Anonymous said...

I never said Flinchum sucks I said the officiating sucked at the gmac. Flinchum is prety good compared to the other Miami officials. What was Dewberry and Cupas test score? Why did they have to send 2 Sarasota officials? Valls and Lanway are prety good but they werent there. Barrera got cheated out of 2 near fall points in the finals. Flinchum called it, Balmeceda told the other ref to take it away, and he did. That was the problem in the whole tournament. The officials listen to these cry baby coaches and they change there calls just because the coaches are crybabys.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

I agree about Noffo, at least as it related to Harris. This negates the theory that he has improved, as Harris seems to have opened the gap against Noffo.

I would like to see the argument from the other side however, but it may not be forthcoming if it was merely an opinion

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

The term sucks is a harsh label on Mr. Flinchum, but I think it's fair to say that despite his high test scores on the officials exam that of the officials presenton those 2 days, he certainly left the most to be desired.

Mr. Valls is a decent official, but would have like Mr.Flinchum been the lesser of those present.

Anonymous said...

As far as Metellus goes, he did take 3rd place last year at the folkstyle Jr. Nationals. He is being sought after by several colleges as far as I know. He had a great off season of wrestling competing against good competition. I think he got off to a slow start this season but he seems to be picking it up.

I do think he is a better wrestler now than he was 2 years ago. Remember, he is seeing better competition now on a regular basis than when he was at Pace.

Anonymous said...

On a lighter note. Any history on wrestlers that did not win g.m.a.c. or regionals but went on to win a state title? Spiderman? Coaches?

There actually is some significant history as to that, the most readily memorable is Wesley Woodrome. He did not win Amy of the majors, losing to Rubenstein each time, yet when the state tournament rolled around he was upset in the semis I believe, while woodrome advanced to and won the state finals.

That is a great argument for the argument of styles
Conflicting.

Anonymous said...

Question for spider-man. How do you feel about barrera's match where the back points were given by the mat official but then taken away by the side official Ford. He openly wears South Dade attire and he works out with them. Isn't that or couldn't that be a conflict of interest? or is that not really a big deal?

Anonymous said...

Most of those officials have a conflict of interest whether they admit it or not. They need to put their interest aside and officiate as if they don't know anyone. Easier said then done right. I don't want to name anyone but I think officials need to do a better job of that.

Spiderman said...

Anonymous,

I agreed with the points being reversed, I believe that not only did Mr. Ford start his count early, but as is the case with young officials, their coin is much too quick.

I think officials can separate their allegiance and be objective and non biased, but it is always better if there is no conflicting interest.

Anonymous said...

The web site contacts for all you sideline officials who seem to think that you can do a better job of officiating than the present GMACWOA members is clearly stated on a comment in this topic. Put up or shut up.

Anonymous said...

Officials should be man enough, and allow another official officiate a match when it a conflict of interest. That would keep it fair. By the way, Flinchum is the worst official in dade county.

Anonymous said...

Noffo has already beat mcphearson twice this year so i wouldnt say he "got lucky". he also had an impressive win against sean donaly at the barron collier tournament...and to say that public school education is better than the education at columbus is just obnoxious and not even worth arguing about.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous,

I'm sorry but kids who can afford a private education are more likely to already be well educated at home. Please don't compare public school kids in general to those lucky few who's parents can actually afford a private school education. Try instead to compare the honors and advanced kids in public schools to your vaunted 'private school' education. If you do that you will find that your private school may indeed fall short. Compare your best to the public schools best and you will be shocked at your findings.

Anonymous said...

Noffo has gotten better but does anyone else think that if winning in wrestling was his main goal then maybe he should have transferred to either South Dade or American?

Anonymous said...

Noffo did not transfer for education purposes. Coral Reef is most probably better in that field. If Columbus is so difficult how can Jake Rio be graduating from there. Anyone can get by just as they do in public school.

Anonymous said...

If winning is not his main goal then mabe he should quit.

Anonymous said...

The FHSAA guidelines are very clear on when an official should not referee a match. Employment at a school, alma mater(less than a 5 to 7 garduate ?), family members ..... In Miami-Dade many coaches have developed mutual respect and even friendship, I do not know what is meant by conflict of interest to others, but I did not see this as an issue at the GMAC tourney. Perceptions are what they are, and one can only envision another doing something that they would do if they were in that position. You can't really know what someone's intentions are when they are on the mat offciating, at best you can only speculate based on what you would do, unless it's just in your nature not to trust anyone.

Anonymous said...

The gmac officials suck. Flincham is not the worst. He is prety good compared to the rest of them. The others were missing points and making calls for there coach"friends". Then when they did make a call, the coachfriend would tell them to change it and they did.

Anonymous said...

No one needs to put or shut up. You chose to be an official so you need to it right regardless of the circumstances. I have the right to critique, that is why we live in a DEMOCRATIC country. I take pride in my line of work and when others critisize me I don't tell them to come and do it if they think they can do it better.

Change is here.

So many here are quick to criticize wrestling officials. I welcome you to take the test and show us how it should be done. While I admit that I do not always agree with an official’s call, I do accept it with finality. I attended the second day at GMAC and believe the crew was fantastic.

Its funny how the comparison of a columbus education and a public school education can even come up. Its amazing how nieve and ignorant some people are. Your honestly going to sit here and say that graduating from lets just say South Dade highschool is the same as graduating from Columbus? If thats so why would one of the assistant principals of South Dade send her own son to Columbus(Alex Wethy the Heavyweight)? Out of all the people south dade has sent to college, how many of them actually stayed and got a degree? How many of them are actually doing something? Not sayin they're not good people and good wrestlers but lets stop the bullshit really fast and be real. The education of a Columbus graduate and that of any other public school grad is vastly different and thats a fact.

Trivia question...

If Columbus is truly a college prep school they should be sending students the Ivy Leagues and other top notch universities at a much greater rate than the public schools do, would everyone not agree?

Last year Hialeah High sent 6 students to the Ivy League on scholarship, how many did Columbus send?

The answer is an embarrassment to Columbus so I bet this trivia question goes unanswered.

Look, Columbus fans, parents and wrestlers we know how you feel. We know that you are disappointed in your inabilities to reach your goals. We know that when you decided to go to Columbus you thought by now you would at least have ONE state title to your name. I mean atleast one Columbus Explorer would stand atop the podium at lakeland by now.

I mean why wouldn't you? You were the best that money could buy! The best coming out of middle school, "county champs"! And, you were going to be coached by a Hall of Fame coach. One of the winningest coaches in US history.

You could also recruit with impunity and use your Hall of Fame coach and private school education as bait. How could this fail.

Plus, your guys had been wrestling since they were just little fellas! Traveling the country wrestling in big national tournaments, Tulsa nationals, Schoolboy nationals, Fargo, etc... You had been around wrestling forever. Enthusiastic parents willing to spend money, time and effort on their wrestling futures.

There was NO way this could FAIL! Instant success! Like a TV dinner, just pop it in and in just a short time SUCCESS!

But then reality kicked in, one year passed, then two, three, now four and no state titles.

But why? How could this happen? We have done everything right. Hall of Fame coach, great school, great facility, experienced wrestlers, money. Why, Why, Why, you cry...

You guys must feel betrayed and deceived. Angered by your failures and decisions. All this time, effort, money and yet NO state titles.

So now instead of bragging about the state titles you, your sons and your team have won you highjack every thread and cling to the one thing that you think you have over the rest of the county, "the Columbus education".

Everybody in this county knows why you sent your sons to Columbus to wrestle for a "Hall of Famer" and it sure as hell wasn't for the EDUCATION! So why don't you guys stop all the bragging and boasting about the education and start bringing home the hardware.

Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock, the clock is ticking and your running out of time!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I have a dream that one day this county will rise up and respect us.

I have a dream that one day the sons of former state qualifiers and state placers will sit together and play connect four.

I have a dream that one day little Columbus boys will be able to play with little South Dade and American boys.

I have a dream that one day my wrestlers will not be judge by the color of their singlets but, by their abilities to read and write.

I have a dream and that is all it will ever be.

Thank you,

AhAhAhAhAhAhAhAhAhA!!!!!! Metellus didn't get any better? He took 3rd in the nation last year for God sake. He beat a kid form New York that made the "Dream Team" this year and is currently ranked #2 in the nation. He went from an "unheard of" to ranked as high as #6 in the country. He went 10- 0 at the Brute Scholastic Duals, placed 5th at the Super 32, 3rd at the NHSCA Jr Nationals. He beat a 3 time state champ soon to be 4 timer from Indiana that was (135-1) and is ranked 11th in the country.

You are right though he didn't get any better, he has always had it in him to be that good! South dade has just given him the platform to expose himself to the rest of the nation and fostered his God given talents. Working out everyday with Tico, Rat, Josh Williams, Acosta and Sanders probably didn't hurt his cause either.

You might want to come out from that cave you live in or the rock you live under. The wrestling world is much larger than dade conty or even the state of Florida and he has proven success on a much larger scale.

Metellus not getting any better is just wishful thinking on your part. It might also be your best effort in trying to convince yourself or someone you love that they could infact beat him. Good Luck with that.

Someone needs to get their facts straight. Ms Wethy is not an AP at South Dade she is a BMT counselor and she just got to South Dade at the beginning of this school year. What was she supposed to do rip Alex away from his friends, teammates and loyalties during his junior year just for wrestling purposes? You better thank your lucky stars he didn't leave and stop bragging about it cause he still has his senior year to transfer.Ut OOOOOO!!!!! Maybe he could go there and become the Valedictorian and win a wrestling state title, you know have the best of both worlds.

Why don't you stop trying to build Columbus up by tearing other public schools down. You can't argue about the results of wrestling tournaments and dual meets so instead you start up with the private school education.

This year will be a big test for the whole college prep school debate. You FINALLY have a few kids that some colleges could be interested in and we'll see if they get offered any scholarships, maybe even some ACADEMIC scholarships. Then we'll all monitor how they do in college and if they finish school, what degrees they get or if they come back home.

You see up until now we couldn't even make the comparisons with Columbus wrestlers and South Dade wrestlers because Columbus never sent any student/athlete to school to wrestle. Most of your kids went to in state colleges and are trust-fund babies who need their parent's wealth to go to college.

Read this real slowly so you can fully comprehend this; "No team in dade county history has sent more kids to college than SOUTH DADE. You are somewhat right though, not all of them finish and some only get AA degrees or go to the service and fight for our freedom (Eric Diaz, Freddie Perez, Aldo Victor) but NO program has done more for their wrestlers than the BUCS.

Metellus was never exposed to nationals or all those tournaments at Pace. That is the reason he was never ranked or have beaten other state champs. Don't get me wrong, he has grown from a boy to a man which has made him a better wrestler. But for two years at South Dade, surrounded by multi-state champion coaches and top wrestlers in the nation and going everywhere to wrestle, he should be UNTOUCHABLE.

Don't talk about Ms. Wethy or Mrs. Noffo. Seriously dude like what are you thinking? Disrespecting women in such manner. You are truly an arrogant prick. As for Columbus/Private School education & IVY College. Columbus has sent numerous amount of students to IVY league schools. My personal friend is playing football at Yale and is a Columbus graduate. It doesn't matter what school you go to whether its private or public. It depends on the student and how hard they want to work and what type of education they want. Now all of you fighting about that get a life and stop arguing about unnecessary things. You're "hater-ism" if that ever was a word it would be used to an extreme is NOT needed. Stop hating on these wrestlers and apparently their mom's also. Just because you couldn't have what they've worked hard for and can't be them doesn't give you the right to talk crap about them!

I almost choked when I noticed Sergio was wearing sneakers. Then I looked at Johnson and so was he.
